We had the good fortune of connecting with Eunice D Flowers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eunice D, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my business actually came from a challenging experience I had while working on a project that involved researching a particular area in Miami for a show. I wanted to gift the people with a highlight segment special to them, showcasing a historical Black neighborhood in the city right before the intermission, but there was one major problem: I couldn’t find any reliable or meaningful information about the people and their stories. This lack of resources made it incredibly difficult to create a narrative that truly captured the essence of the community.

In the midst of the frustration, I remembered a quote from Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.” That moment really struck a chord with me. It made me realize that if I wanted to create content that had depth and impact, I would have to be the one to care enough to seek out those stories, those connections, and the authenticity that was missing. This realization sparked a shift in my approach: if I could make a difference by sharing these underrepresented voices, why not expand that idea into something bigger, where I could create a platform to bring more attention to overlooked stories and voices?

That’s when I started thinking about how I could apply this mindset to a larger project that could make a real impact, through my art, my writing, and my designs. I wanted to create something that not only resonated with people but also empowered them to connect, share, and express themselves in a way that felt meaningful. That’s how the series Maya and Xavier’s Adventures was birthed. It became about creating art that sparked conversation, brought people together, and highlighted what truly matters, preserving history. The mission is to become the voice, the melody to the song of the unheard. I realized I could make a difference beginning here, my home, by shining a light on the untold stories of Miami.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am most proud of my bounce-back action and optimism. My journey has not been easy, as there has been no clear blueprint to follow, but I have learned to embrace that challenge. What sets me apart is my ability to view setbacks not as failures but as stepping stones. My background in science has played a significant role in shaping this mindset. As a scientist, I approach life like a series of experiments. Each attempt is a trial where I understand there is an expected outcome, but I know the result will not always align with those expectations, and that is okay. For me, there are no true failures, only opportunities to analyze, adapt, and try again.

This perspective has allowed me to remain resilient and innovative, even when faced with adversity. Whether it is crafting a new product or navigating a challenging business decision, I approach each step with curiosity and determination. It is this methodical yet optimistic approach that has helped me get to where I am today.

Along the way, I have learned some powerful lessons. Success requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. It is vital to surround yourself with inspiration, whether that comes from people, stories, or your own vision. Most importantly, optimism is not just a mindset but a strategy for moving forward when things do not go as planned.

One powerful lesson I have learned is that every arena has its gatekeepers, individuals or systems that control access and opportunities. Understanding how to navigate these gatekeepers requires persistence, strategy, and the ability to demonstrate your value while staying true to your vision.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that my story is about grit, curiosity, and connection. Everything I create, whether through my art, my writing, or my business, is meant to inspire others to keep going, to embrace their uniqueness, and to see challenges as opportunities for growth. My journey is proof that with the right perspective, you can turn trials into triumphs and create something truly meaningful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question because hosting visitors gives me a chance to show them a side of Miami that goes beyond its typical vacation spots. I like to curate an itinerary that captures the true spirit of the city.

Day 1: Welcome to Miami – Cuban Heritage and Local Vibes
We’d start with breakfast at Versailles in Little Havana, indulging in their iconic cafecito and pastelitos. Afterward, we’d explore Calle Ocho, visiting cigar shops, galleries, and live music spots that showcase the heart of Cuban culture. For dinner, we’d enjoy Macillon Grio, where authentic Haitian dishes like griot, diri ak djon djon, and pikliz offer a flavorful introduction to Miami’s Caribbean influence.

Day 2: Art and Wynwood Energy
The morning would begin in Wynwood, exploring the vibrant Wynwood Walls and nearby galleries filled with bold murals and creative energy. Lunch would be at House of Mac, a beloved Miami spot serving up indulgent comfort food with a twist. Their famous lobster mac and cheese and jerk chicken pasta are the perfect way to refuel while soaking in Wynwood’s lively atmosphere. For dinner, we’d head to Salvaje, a rooftop restaurant serving phenomenal Asian-inspired cuisine—especially their spare ribs—with breathtaking views of the city.

Day 3: Historical Reflection at Virginia Key Beach
We’d spend the morning at Historic Virginia Key Beach, a site with profound significance as a sanctuary for Black residents during segregation in the 1940s. I’d share the story of its resilience and role as a beloved community space. We’d enjoy a seafood picnic from Joe’s Takeaway, soaking in the serene atmosphere. For dinner, we’d head to Potiwa Pizza in North Miami, where their seafood pizza is an absolute must-try, combining fresh, local flavors with a creative twist.

Day 4: Beach Relaxation and Soulful BBQ
We’d spend the day at Key Biscayne, where the tranquil beaches offer the perfect escape. After soaking up the sun, we’d head to BBQ Rib Shack at 12101 NW 27th Ave for lunch, enjoying their mouthwatering ribs, hearty sides, and no-frills, down-home cooking. This local gem offers an authentic taste of Miami’s soulful culinary scene. The rest of the day would be spent exploring the area or simply relaxing.

Day 5: Day Trip to the Keys
We’d take a day trip to the Florida Keys, stopping in Key Largo or Islamorada for a change of scenery. Lunch at Morada Bay would offer picturesque views and a laid-back ambiance. On the way back, we’d stop for dinner at The Little Havana Restaurant on Biscayne Boulevard, known for its warm atmosphere and authentic Cuban cuisine, with dishes like ropa vieja, vaca frita, and Cuban sandwiches that truly reflect the flavors of Miami.

Day 6: Nature and Adventure
We’d start the day at Greynolds Park, a peaceful retreat perfect for kayaking along winding waterways and enjoying Miami’s natural beauty. After a refreshing outdoor adventure, we’d have dinner at El Gran Inka, a Peruvian gem offering authentic and exquisite dishes like lomo saltado, ceviche, and arroz con mariscos. Its vibrant flavors and warm atmosphere make it the perfect place to end the day.

For the final day, we’d begin with brunch at Yardbird Table and Bar, where classic Southern dishes like fried chicken, biscuits, and shrimp and grits are elevated to perfection. This charming spot combines comfort food with a touch of sophistication, making it the ideal start to the day. For lunch, we’d head to Evio’s Pizza and Grill, where their unique and delicious pizza offerings showcase Miami’s casual, everyday charm. The afternoon would be spent at South Pointe Park, enjoying breathtaking views of the city and ocean. For the grand finale, dinner would be at Sugar, a rooftop bar and restaurant offering incredible views of the Miami skyline, a perfect way to toast to an unforgettable week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I always say that the phrase “self-made” is such a deceptive and narcissistic position to take. None of us truly succeed without the influence of others, whether directly or indirectly. Even still, this question is difficult for me to answer because it implies there’s been someone singularly committed to my success—and honestly, that hasn’t been the case for me.

Instead, I’d like to acknowledge the collective influences that have shaped my journey. From the authors whose words inspired me to keep dreaming—Langston Hughes, the depth and wisdom of James Baldwin, the brilliance of Lorraine Hansberry, the timeless eloquence of Shakespeare, the unwavering determination of Marcus Garvey, and the powerful voice of Ntozake Shange. Each of their works lit a fire within me and offered guidance through their profound stories and perspectives. From the authors whose words inspired me to keep dreaming, to the quiet resilience I’ve witnessed in others navigating their own challenges, and even the people who doubted me—it all fueled my determination to create and succeed. My story is a tapestry woven from many threads of indirect guidance, unspoken lessons, and moments of inspiration that came from unexpected places.

So, while I can’t point to one person or group who’s been dedicated to my success, I’m deeply grateful for the ways life has nudged me forward through the experiences and influences that have crossed my path.
