We had the good fortune of connecting with Filippo Marino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Filippo, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Risk perception is arguably the most consequential domain of human decision-making. It shapes how we navigate the world and directly affects our ability to survive and thrive. Our mission is to improve how we measure, communicate, and decide about risk, This means that we can not only reduce uncertainty, innumeracy and bias about threats and hazards that lead to unnecessary fear and anxiety, but we can measurably reduce preventable accidents, diseases, and victimization in both the high-income nations and the developing world.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Safe-esteem is a tech startup squarely focused on improving personal and family well-being by elevating risk awareness and decision-making quality. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted this immense and urgent need, with 100s of thousands of lives lost because of ineffective communication, innumeracy, and disinformation. We believe that mobile and wearable technology, and all the behavior design insights that enabled the success of social media platforms, can improve personal health, safety, and longevity rather than simply turning us all into addicted consumers.

In a nutshell, we are building the first personal safety barometer. Where the Apple watch tracks our steps, heartbeat or quality of sleep, and Credit Karma monitors our credit score, Safe-esteem will track our personal risk & safety as we go about our day at home, around town or while traveling.

So far, we built and released the world’s most advanced travel risk rating platform, and its core metrics are free for everyone.

It took over five years to get here, and we are still in embryo. It has been – and continues to be – incredibly hard, and only someone with an insane amount of passion and commitment would want to embark on this kind of journey. But, after working for nearly 30 years managing risks and protecting some of the world’s largest corporations and wealthiest individuals, the opportunity to empower everyone with greater personal risk and safety competency is the most inspiring and energizing mission I could ask for.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I remain a South Beach ‘soul’. Nothing like a stroll on South Point, jogging by the beach, grabbing a Cuban sandwich at Cortadito and, on special occasions, an amazing dinner at Mila.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Gretchen. The life of an obsessed subject matter expert and entrepreneur can be extraordinarily self-absorbed and demanding for those around them. I have been incredibly fortunate to find a life partner who has shouldered all the sacrifices that come with pursuing a very challenging profession and the demands of founding an ambitious startup with and for me.
