We had the good fortune of connecting with G. Darkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi G., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
To me, risk means stepping into the unknown, even when it feels uncomfortable. I believe that you can’t truly know if something is right for you until you give it a try. This approach to risk-taking has played a significant role in my life, especially given my physical limitations. One of the biggest risks I took was choosing to share the most vulnerable parts of myself through my art. Eight years ago, I decided to embrace painting, even though it felt daunting at the time. This risk has paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Not only has it allowed me to express my authenticity, but it has also pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me grow both as an individual and as an artist.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve put in over 8 years of practice to get where I am today. Some days were harder than others because of the pressure I put on myself and the fear of not being ‘good’ enough. But I learned to manage these challenges by adopting meditative practices like breathing exercises and giving myself time outside of painting to recharge. I want people to see that there’s strength in our weaknesses. My brand is about embracing that and inspiring others to pursue what they love with passion and grace. That’s what sets me apart.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m more of a homebody, but if my best friend was visiting, I’d definitely take them to Wynwood. It’s a vibrant area filled with incredible street art, galleries, and creative spaces. We’d spend the day exploring the murals and checking out the local art scene. For lunch, there’s some great spots in the area where we could grab a bite—maybe try some fresh tacos or a trendy café. I love eating out, so we’d make sure to visit a few different restaurants throughout the week, trying foods from different cultures—Miami has so much to offer in that regard. It would be a laid-back but fun experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, my story wouldn’t be what it is today without my mom’s unwavering love and support. She’s been there through all my self-doubt and anxiety, always ready to listen and share her wisdom. The strength and courage she’s shown in her own life have inspired me to keep going, even when things get tough. She’s my safe space, and I wouldn’t be where I am without her.

I also have to shout out Tuesdays with Morrie. That book really hit home for me. It was like this gentle reminder to just do what makes me happy, to really enjoy myself while I’m doing it. Morrie’s lessons made me realize how important it is to cherish the moments we have, embrace the relationships that make our lives richer, and just live with authenticity and purpose. It’s something I try to carry with me every day.
