We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaby Alfaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gaby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to create a safe space for female soccer athletes. An environment where they saw women everyday doing what they love in a sport were male figures are predominant. Wanted to create an environment were the sports wasn’t our only priority, the athlete was.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe that what sets GVA Soccer apart is the idea of women only. It’s this concept where all of our staff are women who were or are in the sport today. Coaches who have played and lived the sport and can be a guide for those players currently in that journey. There’s something about being coached by a women, if you are a girl. There’s something about that emotional understanding. I believe this is what sets us apart.

Don’t get me wrong, we can be emotionally understanding/aware something I believe women are experts at. However, at GVA we are still competitive, driven, experts in what we do everyday. We are the perfect combination of balance. We push our players like the competitive athletes that they are, pushing their limits so they can be better and guiding them through their trainings, still remembering that at the end of the day they are humans as well.

The journey of building GVA Soccer wasn’t easy. I don’t think being “your own boss” will ever be easy. I actually think it’s the hardest job. You are constantly doing a million jobs at once. However, it is all worth it at the end. You overcome the everyday challenges reminding yourself that this is what you love and that the impact an environment like this can have on a player is priceless. You learn that failure is only a step closer to being where you need to be. When you don’t know something it’s an opportunity God gives you to learn and we should always take it. At the end of the day, learning is what makes you a better person. I’m sure we’ve all heard it before “knowledge is power”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being in Fort Lauderdale/Miami, you understand that these cities really never sleep and there’s always something to do. Personally, I believe that the Japanese cuisine here in Miami is something everyone must experience. It’s unique, delicate, and of course delicious. I’m an experience type of person so Sushi by Scratch would be a must. I have a deep passion for fine dinning. There’s something about good food and great company that is priceless.

Places I would suggest, would be anything that delivers an experience. Again, I’m all about experience. A place that takes you out of the space you are in. Wine tasting at Schnelby Winery takes you back to Italy but with a touch of Key West. I love that place. It has a lot more to do than just wine tasting. You can listen to live music, watch outdoor movies, beer tasting etc. Morikami Gardens is a great hang out/visit place. It’s relaxing and a great spot for meditation. The interaction with nature is peaceful and it is a great mini getaway. The place is quiet and the history behind it is quite impressive.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God, has been a huge pillar in my success. Thanks to him I have what I have today. Everything I do today is to honor him.
