Meet Genesha Rhymer | aspiring journalist and trailblazer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Genesha Rhymer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Genesha, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
This quote, “If someone tells you no, you are talking to the wrong person,” resonates deeply because it carries a powerful message of perseverance and perspective. It reminds us that a “no” isn’t the end of the road but a signal to keep moving until we find the right opportunity or person who aligns with our vision or needs. Life often teaches us that obstacles and rejections are not permanent; they are redirections.
The idea that “delayed doesn’t mean denied” beautifully complements this. It’s a reminder that while things might not happen in the way or timeframe we expect, that doesn’t mean they’re out of reach entirely. Sometimes, the timing isn’t right, or the person we’re speaking to doesn’t have the capacity or willingness to help us move forward. But that’s not a reflection of our worth or potential—just a sign to adjust our approach.
For me, this lesson is one I’ve had to revisit often. Rejection can feel personal and discouraging, but I’ve come to understand it as part of the process, not the final answer. Staying persistent and believing in the possibility of “yes” fuels my motivation. Every “no” brings me closer to finding the right “yes,” whether that’s from a new opportunity, person, or even within myself as I grow and adapt.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been shaped by a passion for storytelling and a drive to create meaningful connections through sports media. What sets me apart is my ability to humanize athletes and bring authenticity to my work. I’m proud of launching “Gametime with Nesh” at FIU, a groundbreaking project that showcases my creativity and leadership.
Getting here wasn’t easy. I’ve faced challenges like self-doubt, balancing responsibilities, and being one of the few Black women in my field. I overcame them by trusting my faith, staying adaptable, and constantly seeking growth. I struggled like many teenagers. I battle depression, anxiety, and bullying just like any normal person because I wanted to standout.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned are the importance of persistence, being my own advocate, and never being afraid to take risks. I want the world to know my story is about breaking barriers and inspiring others to see what’s possible when you work hard, believe in yourself, and embrace who you are. My brand is about authenticity, ambition, and fearlessness.
I got to where I am by never allowing myself to stay comfortable. Every step in my journey has been about pushing boundaries, taking risks, and stepping into new challenges. I’ve always believed in embracing discomfort as a sign of growth. Whether it was trying something new, like sideline reporting, or creating my own project, Gametime with Nesh, I’ve leaned into the unknown. Never be afraid to step on anyones toes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Miami for a week, I’d make sure they had the ultimate mix of fun, culture, and excitement. Here’s how I’d plan it:
Day 1: Start with a beach day at South Beach, followed by dinner at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar for some classic comfort food.
Day 2: Explore Wynwood Walls for art and culture, then grab tacos at Coyo Taco. End the night at a rooftop bar like Sugar in Brickell.
Day 3:*Head to an FIU Panthers football game to show off campus life, then grab a bite at the FIU food court or a nearby Cuban spot like Versailles.
Day 4:** Spend the day in Little Havana, visiting Domino Park and trying authentic Cuban coffee and pastries. Dinner at Ball & Chain, with live music.
Day 5: Catch a Miami Heat game at Kaseya Center and soak up the electric atmosphere. Before the game, grab burgers at Kush in Wynwood.
Day 6: Take a day trip to Key Biscayne for kayaking and nature, then come back to explore Brickell City Centre for some shopping.
Day 7: Wrap up with a boat tour of Biscayne Bay and a final dinner at Prime 112 to end the trip on a high note.
Miami is all about energy and diversity, and with this itinerary, we’d experience the best of both.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In my journey as an aspiring journalist and what some would consider a trailblazer, I owe everything to the sacrifices, prayers, and unwavering support of two key pillars in my life: God , my mom Annette, and my brother Jama.
God has been the foundation of my strength and resilience. Through challenges, delays, and uncertainties, my faith has provided me with direction, courage, and the conviction that every obstacle is part of a greater plan. Without His guidance and the countless blessings He has bestowed upon me, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He has picked me up when I didnt know i could walk in my purpose again.
My mom deserves endless recognition for the incredible sacrifices she has made to ensure I could become the person I am. She has worked tirelessly, often putting her own needs aside, to give me the best opportunities possible. She uprooted her life to move to the states to help me become a better version of me. Whether it was through late-night prayers, being my biggest cheerleader, or going the extra mile to make sure I had everything I needed, her love and dedication have been my driving force. Her strength, wisdom, and belief in me inspire me every day to work harder, dream bigger, and give back.
In addition to God and my mom, I want to dedicate my recognition and gratitude to my late brother, Jama Rhymer, whose life and memory continue to inspire me every day. Losing him has been one of the hardest challenges I’ve faced, but his spirit lives on in everything I do. Jama was a source of love, support, and strength for so many. I carry his legacy in my heart as I push forward in my journey knowing I cant let him down
Together, their influence has shaped me into someone who strives for excellence, embraces faith, and seeks to make a difference in the lives of others. This recognition is as much theirs as it is mine!
