Meet GiL (Gilmarie Villanueva)

We had the good fortune of connecting with GiL (Gilmarie Villanueva) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi GiL (Gilmarie Villanueva), why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up in a music-loving family. From a young age, my parents immersed me in music, enrolling me in various programs and after-school activities. They nurtured my love for music and my talent, and I could even participate in a few reality shows, which not only deepened my love for music but also gave me invaluable performance experience. With their support, I felt comfortable enough to pursue a music career.

Thanks to a scholarship from the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, I studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. That’s where I honed my skills and discovered my unique sound. After graduating, I’ve been focused on my music career. I’ve always been passionate about music and have a profound love for it—I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m GiL, a Latin Urban music artist hailing from Arecibo, Puerto Rico. My music is a vibrant fusion of Trap, House, R&B, and Urbano genres, reflecting the rich rhythms of my homeland.

As I mentioned earlier, my journey into the world of music started at a young age, nurtured by my musically inclined family. With my mom’s love for Mo-town and R&B, and my father’s passion for old-school reggaeton and salsa, music became an integral part of my life. This foundation paved the way for me to eventually showcase my talent on reality shows like La Voz Kids and The X Factor, setting the stage for my future in the industry.

One of the most defining moments in my career came when I learned about the Rockstar Energy Presents: Mic Check con Myke Towers contest. Without hesitation, I jumped on the opportunity and submitted my entry, and to my disbelief a few months later, I was the winner – it’s a dream come true. Since then, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Myke Towers when he surprised me in a studio in Miami.

He gave me candid advice that to be the best version of myself, I need to stay focused and disciplined on my music, ignoring distractions and opinions from others. After having spoken to him in person, I feel mentally and physically energized to give my all on stage with him this year. I really took his words to heart, and having him choose me is a full-circle moment because he’s been one of my favorites for years.

Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce the upcoming release of my EP, “Fugaz” (which means “Shooting Star”). Dropping on June 7, 2024, this collection of six songs has been a labor of love, and I cannot wait to share it with the world.

Ultimately, I want the world to know that my music is more than just melodies and lyrics; it’s a reflection of my identity, my roots, and the journey that has shaped me. I’m excited to bring my music to the world this year and hope you’ll check it out.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places in Miami is the House of Hits studio, where I had the memorable experience of meeting Myke Towers and having my first interview with Billboard.

For dining, I love La Carreta. It’s a Miami-based restaurant offering the most authentic Cuban cuisine and a lively atmosphere.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, my family – their love, support, and encouragement have been the fuel to my fire. Without them and their love for music, none of this would be possible.

To my manager, you’ve been a mentor, a friend, and a constant source of belief in my talent. Thank you for always having my back and pushing me to be my best.

The opportunity you’ve given me to showcase my music on such a big stage means the world to me.
