We had the good fortune of connecting with Gintare Blooming Sky Florist and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gintare, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have worked in very prestigious floral store in Los Angeles couple years ago, and I fell in love with floral designs, profit it brings. I was trained by extremely talented and experienced designers and I was very good at it. So I decided to open my own floral business as under the consequences of events I had to move to Miami. I noticed that Miami does not have that kind of lush modern designs to offer. And 2 years later, last week actually I purchased an established floral business in Fort Lauderdale it is called “A Marc in Design” which going to be run under my name by me.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started everything from scratch. What sets me apart from other is that I did the work that noone wants to do, it is like the bottom of an iceberg below the water- if you know what I mean:) I started from creating my website, and oh God I am not in It at all. So if I had to do it again it would painful haha, that how much I hate It works lol. Then I created my business cards and flyers. And one day I just started walking into condominiums starting with Edgewater, Downtown and Brickell and etc, then every boutique in Miami Design District, Bal Harbor Shops and Aventura Mall and etc. So any building you can see on Miami map from Coral Gables up to Hollywood I walked into, talked to managers and people in charge and introduced my floral service. I believe that the hardest part was not only to walk in but definitely to BEGIN walking. And that’s what I believe people are not willing to do the hard part for their success. It was not easy at all, Lesson I learnt is- get straight to the person in charge, even tho they are not at the place at the moment or they are the rudest, always ask their business card, so you have their email to introduce yourself again and share your portfolio. And then you get those hundreds of card- go send those email to each of them, HUNDREDS OF EMAILS lol. And for better idea how hard is it to get into this business in a new city from zero- from 500 email I sent, 5 would answer and maybe 1 would like to work with you. Another, problem that exist probably in many industries is “THIS IS MEN’S WORLD”. For example, it is very very hard for woman to be chosen to collaborate if you are in competition with a man who owns the floral business. They most of the time chose man. Funny but they forget that behind the scenes it is not that man-owner designing your flowers, there are usually women floral designers doing the job.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Personally I am a big fan of fine dining, live music and places with a taste of Europe. I would take my friend for lunch to Amara, have a drink at Four Seasons at Surfside (can not get more European than this place), have a dinner at Setai Jaya restaurant- nice food and love the DJ playing there on weekends. I would definitely take her/him to Vyszcaya Museum, I just love that architecture! I would definitely take her/him to my workout. And absolutely gorgeous Miami beaches.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I can not think of any in particular, but definitely my family back in Lithuania and my closest friends were my biggest support. Moreover, even though I was not mentored by anyone to open or manage floral business, but I absolutely admired my previous bosses that made everything seem easy to manage and be successful. Actually, that woman just came to my mind- the very first who hired me for her small family floral shop, her name was Farah- amazing, intelligent, warm, kind Iranian woman, I kept her as a role to learn from and build my career.
