Meet Dr. Lorneka Joseph | Pharmacist | Coach | Speaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lorneka Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Lorneka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my business Brightly Awake because I recognized that there are dreams and desires God placed on the inside of me that would be confined as a corporate employee.
My business was also birthed out of a need to create safe spaces for women (and men) to heal through accountability.
In high school and around family members, I noticed a pattern that people would come to me seeking wisdom on a plethora of issues. The issues ranged from relationships to faith to purpose and more.
And this continued throughout college so I took a refund check and submitted paperwork to register my business with the state. So my company is a service-based business that provides wellness and emotional intelligence solutions for individuals and organizations.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a native of The Bahamas and entrepreneurial-pharmacist who resides in Florida. I love conch, kale, God and people.
I’m am an alum of Miami-Dade College and Florida A&M University.
Over the span of my career, I’ve been featured in publications like Forbes and Essence magazine for my impact in mental health and wellness. I’ve also been hired by colleges and corporations globally to motivate and share my story.
I believe what sets me apart is the fact that I don’t let my corporate position as a pharmacist limit my influence and faith empowers me in this work.
I know medical experts are somewhat afraid of going deeper with their expertise but I refuse to be limited or muted.
Once I recognized the value of my voice and creativity, I became active by doing things that would improve my life and community. For example, I researched conferences and listen to podcasts on business and mindset.
This path was NOT easy at all. My calling in wellness started painfully through the deaths of my mum and grandmother.
They both died from chronic diseases. My mum died from multiple sclerosis while we were in Cuba and that changed me.
One of the ways I overcome the season of grief and failure was acknowledging that I needed help.
I saw how saving everyone led them to a place of fear and burn out and I don’t want that for myself or younger brother.
Lessons I learned along the way were recognizing that I cannot live well and fulfill my purpose by trying to please everyone.
I also learned that your past is NOT your identity. I think people especially women believe that we are nothing if we’re not producing but there is POWER in emotional rest.
Prior to the years of success, God placed me a test tube to be processed and it didn’t feel good because my previous identity was being a performer.
Mental health and inner healing isn’t a hashtag for me.
I want people to know that it’s my calling to teach others how to prioritize their success through wellness without losing their souls. God brought me from a place of lack as an island girl but determination can change your future.
My company Brightly Awake is here to serve all nationalities, races and more. In an ever-changing world, it’s time for people to redefine success and awaken to holistic TRUTH.
If you’re an employee, entrepreneur or in between transition, map out a plan that will simplify your life and curate joy.
Finally, seek help even if it’s outside of your circle because you DESERVE people who can support year round.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take my best friend to Winter Gardens area where we could walk and patronize a few of the restaurants.
Another favorite spot is Jazz Tastings. There’s a live band every weekend and their mango salmon is delicious.
We enjoy art so we would end the week downtown Orlando to see a show at the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow! I can honestly say that my REFINED village home in The Bahamas and here in Florida deserves credit for my success.
Had it not been for the Lord, family, friends and my spiritual circle, success wouldn’t be as sweet as it is now.
