Meet Greg Owen | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Owen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greg, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a child growing up , I was the only one in my family who was drawn to the creative side of life. With every blank piece of water or card board I would pick up a pencil, pen or anything that would leave a mark on the surface. As time went by I realized that creating art was more than a hobby; art is my passion, it was my calling in life. I would say the creative life choose me as I choose it. Painting is where I have found my love for expressing my imagination on canvas. Often, “chasing your dreams” can be a little intimidating, but it can also be fulfilling. Deciding to pursue art was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It even became clearer why a friend bought one of my art pieces placed it in his house.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other is that I pull inspiration for his pieces from his surroundings as well as personal experiences. I enjoys adding a unique perspective to his technique thus making each piece memorable. He mostly uses acrylics and oil as this easily allow him to transcend and fuse bright, vibrant colors which embodies his mantra of “Adding color to people’s lives. Recently he has been using modeling paste to add texture and an element of 2D to his art. Life is too good not to take positive lessons from it.”
Overcoming challenges and learning from them takes great courage. I believe that you have to trust your process and your gut instinct and your purpose. This is what can make a difference and push your career where it needs to go. I realized that my art/ journey is one that was worth sharing because it not only brings people together but through my art a positive message is sent out.
I want the world to know that my work is a reflection of my struggles, my love for animals ,architecture and its done in a way where we can all feel connected.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would say I’m a foodie. I do enjoy food finger licking food. I crave a well designed signature cocktail nicely garnished. I would say some of the places that i would suggest for you to hangout in Kingston. Susie’s bakery, CRU Bar usually has a nice vibe. If would like the mountain you could go to Café Blue. Negril is awesome amazing when it comes to beach, speaking of which as a 7 mile stretch of just pure white sand, while there please go see Rick’s Café and stay for the sunset and good vibe. Moving over to Ocho Rios where they get a lot of cruise ships coming in. There’s amazing tourist attraction to do. To may a few, Dolphin Cove, Mystic Mountain, Dun’s River Falls and for a more messy tour make sure to check you Chukka Adventures. Jamaica is such a gem in itself. A place where something for everyone.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, from the start was my biggest supporter. I would also love to give a shoutout these persons who has pushed be to better in my craft especially Dominic who has challenged be in trying new ways of painting and to get out of my comfort zone, Mario, Desrieina, Howard, Ansel and Jason.
