We had the good fortune of connecting with Hentaayy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hentaayy, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
So, I’m from Broward County—specifically Pompano Beach. Everything has always been so fast and flashy, and I think there’s a beauty in that. Coming from a family that made sure to teach me my worth, and a city where if you didn’t have anything, you had your pride, the energy and self love I’ve nurtured is crazy. I know who I am and what I’m capable of, thanks to that.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art, in any aspect, is an extension of me. I try to be as honest and forthcoming as possible, and that’s what separates me. Everybody has their thing, and it’s so much easier to stand out when you’re being yourself. I learned really early that no one can do what you do, and how you do it. I’m most proud of my musical development. I’ve really found my footing in a foundation that sonically, and lyrically, I’m in love with. I’ve really crafted a sound that’s my own, so needless to say I’ve given myself flowers for that. By no means was it an easy task. I was definitely in my own way. I was scared of growing out of the identity I felt like I needed to live in as a creative. Trying to break boxes you put yourself in is a heavy thing, but once you realize you’re your own worst enemy, you can start take those steps towards growth and realization. A lot of that credit also goes to my friends. I’ve been lucky enough to have an amazing support group along the way. They’re definitely my biggest cheerleaders and I love them boys for that. They taught me that no matter what you set out to do, you can’t do it alone; and honestly, why would you want to? I really just want the world to know that it’s cool to be different, because everybody is. The sooner you accept that, is the sooner that you start making some really big steps.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So, I’m all about little hole in the wall spots. I love supporting local businesses, and Broward has plenty to support. I’m definitely a self-proclaimed foodie, so I’m all about where we should eat. One of my personal favorites, PanFiyah, is a definite go to. They have some fire takes on Jamaican food that had me hooked. We’d definitely have to make some stops at Wimbo’s, World Famous, Kubo, and Keke’s for a cool brunch. I’m definitely not old enough to drink, but there’s some cool places to visit. Growing up in Broward, a staple for me was Galaxy Skateway. The beach is always on the list too. If you go just a bit north of Broward, Boca has a sick Japanese garden. All in all, it’s about the good food and pretty scenery.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would definitely like to shoutout Clive Anthony, he’s been so pivotal in my early development as an artist, and remains as a supportive force for me, and he’s a phenomenal artist!
