Meet Hugo Mijares | Universal Designer, Artist, Architect, Innovator and Progressive thinker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugo Mijares and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hugo, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My journey has been shaped by both opportunity and adversity. Born in Utah while my parents pursued their graduate studies, I returned with them to Caracas, Venezuela, where I immersed myself in architecture, art, and design. Those years were formative, blending creativity with the rich cultural backdrop of my homeland. However, as a corrupt regime took hold, the landscape changed. The political and economic instability made it increasingly difficult to thrive professionally and personally.
Faced with these challenges, I returned to the U.S. for graduate school—a decision that ultimately became permanent. While my roots remain deeply tied to Venezuela, my career and life are now firmly planted in the U.S., where I have found stability and the freedom to pursue my passions. My experience is a testament to resilience, the power of education, and the pursuit of a future unbound by political turmoil.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art, for me, is a seamless extension of architecture, design, and motion. It is the thread that weaves together the spaces we inhabit, the objects we use, and even the machines we move with. As a creative director for a well-known architecture firm, my work spans houses, buildings, furniture, utilitarian objects, and my own collections of wallpaper, textiles, and rugs. But my artistic vision doesn’t stop there—I explore architectural wearable eyewear and high-end speed machines, particularly motorcycles, as part of a broader philosophy of design as a way of life.
What sets my work apart is the fusion of disciplines. I believe architecture is not just about structures—it’s about experience. The same principles that shape a building’s form and function influence how I approach furniture, textiles, and even motorcycles. Each design is an exploration of balance, proportion, and movement, whether it’s a home, a chair, or a machine built for speed.
Getting to where I am today has been a journey of relentless curiosity, hard work, and resilience. It was not easy—building a creative career means constantly pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and overcoming setbacks. The lessons I’ve learned are invaluable: the importance of adaptability, the power of collaboration, and the necessity of staying true to one’s artistic vision.
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about storytelling, function, and emotion. Whether through architecture, objects, or machines, my work is about crafting experiences that resonate and endure.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Miami for a week, I’d curate an itinerary that blends the city’s waterfront charm, luxury, and vibrant culture—giving them an unforgettable experience.
We’d start with an afternoon boat tour, cruising through Biscayne Bay, taking in the skyline, and embracing the ocean breeze. After that, we’d stop for drinks at Amara at Paraiso, where the views and cocktails perfectly capture Miami’s essence.
A half-day at Soho Beach House would be a must—relaxing by the pool, soaking in the sun, and enjoying the exclusive ambiance. For shopping, we’d split our time between the Miami Design District, where fashion, art, and design intersect, and Bal Harbour Shops, a haven for luxury brands and an elegant shopping experience. While at Bal Harbour, we’d unwind at MAKOTO, indulging in some of the best Japanese cuisine in the city.
Mornings would begin at Sadelle’s, where the bagels and smoked salmon set the tone for a perfect day. Afternoons would take us to Coconut Grove, grabbing a cold beer at a laid-back bar, followed by a taco feast at KOKO Coconut Grove, where bold flavors and a relaxed atmosphere make for a great meal.
To close out the trip in style, we’d toast with champagne and enjoy a refined dinner at Casa Tua, an intimate escape that feels like a hidden European gem.
This itinerary captures what I love most about Miami—the perfect balance of waterfront relaxation, high-end indulgence, and effortlessly cool experiences.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
No journey is ever walked alone, and mine has been shaped by the unwavering support, love, and inspiration of many. First and foremost, I am deeply grateful to my parents, whose vision and support laid the foundation for my path. Their belief in education, perseverance, and creative expression gave me the confidence to pursue architecture, art, and design.
My wife and kids are the true driving force behind everything I do. Their love, encouragement, and constant inspiration push me to be better every day—both as a professional and as a person.
The tenacity and resilience instilled in me from my upbringing, combined with the privilege of seeing much of the world, have profoundly shaped my way of thinking and my approach to design. Every experience, every culture, every challenge has contributed to my creative perspective.
I also owe a great deal to my grad school mentors, particularly Jorge Silvetti, Dr David Crane,John Campbell, and many more, whose guidance and wisdom expanded my architectural thinking and helped refine my craft. Their mentorship was invaluable, and their influence continues to resonate in my work today.
To all who have been part of my journey—family, mentors, colleagues, and the experiences that have shaped me—I extend my deepest gratitude.
