We had the good fortune of connecting with J Christian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi J, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is that I’ve been in my industry for 47 years. I’m hairdresser by trade and traveled the world as an educator and platform artist. I have used all brands of scissors and worked with lots of other product and professional companies. My success comes from being one of the people who I do business with. I can relate to them with all the concerns and issues they have dealing with customers standing behind a chair and doing business. In my career, I have owned three hair salons at one point and I’ve always had the thought process of what’s next, what’s the next adventure? So Fear The shear was born out of that what’s next. I was taught to sharpen by a man who spent five years in Japan with the top three shear manufacturers. And I’ve been sharpening for about 10 years now. I started sharpening as a side job when I wasn’t traveling or in my salon. Lots of factors that go along with sharpening scissors, there’s a finesse to it. The benefit of using my company to sharpen shears is I’m a hairdresser. I know what a shear is supposed to feel like, cut like, and perform when it’s at its best. I relate the success of my brand to the fact that I have been and am one of the people that my customers are. I’m one of them.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So as I stated before my opening comments. What truly set me apart from the other people who sharpen right now. I am a hairdresser by trade. I’ve used all types of shears, all brands of shears so I know the materials shears are made out of, which one’s are the best and I know what a shear is supposed to feel like and how they’re actually made. As I understand the other sharpeners in my area are not hairdressers so they’re sharpening technique uses machines or grinders. This was the specific reason why I started sharpening. I’m not giving them people a hard time or condemning them. I just don’t agree with the method of which they sharpen. The method of which I sharpen is a Water Stone and leather system. It’s how the Shears were sharpened when they were made, and that is how I sharpen. The other sharpeners also change the angle of which the blade edge was formed. That’s a big factor and why I started sharpening and why I choose a water and stone method. The other sharpeners when they put your shears on a machine, they remove way too much metal from your shear. My method of sharpening leaves your shear in the best possible Condition and gives you a lot more longevity of your tool

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My personal route of business takes me from Miami Lakes to Jupiter, Florida. There are lots of places that I like that would be great to visit with a friend. Jupiter has some really nice food and drink places to hang out. Boca Raton has some great places to hang out. Coral Springs Where I live has good restaurants and places to eat Aventura is a busy place to go. I’ve traveled to all these places so frequently I don’t really have a favorite place, but I have lots of places that would be great to take friends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I always thank God for my success. He’s the one that grants me the will, the power, and the ability to do what I do. I also couldn’t do this without my loving wife who supports me through this. I’ve also had some wonderful mentors throughout my career. Michael O’Roarke, Alan Benfield Bush, Vince Pizzalotto. that helped me understand what it means to stand behind a chair and do business behind a chair and how to talk the talk and walk the walk
