We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaime Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaime, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to wake up late… Lol. Just kidding. Not really. I wanted to be able to create without having restrictions. I just find it exciting when a client comes to me with a spark of an idea and I help them turn it into something they had only dreamed about.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always preferred to be called a cartoonist because I’ve always loved drawing cartoons. I grew up drawing my favorite characters from comics and the cartoon section from the Sunday news paper. Growing up the dream was to draw for Disney one day. That dream came in 1992. I started freelancing at the Disney New York office then in the Miami office in 1993. In Miami I worked for Disney Latin America. One of the things I would do was create new art work of Mickey Mouse and his friends. I’d put them in different themes such as Christmas or Halloween. One year I drew them as the 3 musketeers. Later I found out that the art work I created inspired Disney animation to create the fist Mickey Mouse movie in 50 years. I was pretty proud of that moment. In 1999 Disney moved our office to Argentina. I was in the middle of creating art of Mickey as a space man. I gave the art to coworkers that moved to work at Disney world. Fast forward a few years and I take my wife and kids to Disney world. We exit a ride in tomorrow land. It leads us into the gift shop and to my surprise all of my space man Mickey art was decorating the entire store. I was really proud of that moment because it was my art on the walls.
It’s never easy starting out it requires someone giving you a chance. Once they do it’s all on you to show them what you can do. The most important lesson I’ve learned and would pass on is always be kind and respectful to your clients. It might be hard sometimes but they could lead you to your next client. The one thing I’d like people to know about 3 Blind Mice Studios is that we will not stop working on a project until the client is satisfied 100%.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m older now so I’ve slowed down with the hanging out. Now we’re all be happy having a nice meal at a place where we can see the ocean. When I was younger and lived in Miami my home was like a hotel everyone I knew wanted to visit. I would take my family and friends to Lincoln Rd, South beach, Bayside and Coconut Grove. We’d start the day at News Cafe on Ocean dr for breakfast.. Then layout on the beach. have a light meal at the Clevelander. Go home shower go to Lincoln rd for dinner. Go to a club all night then end up at news cafe or the diner on 11th and Washington ave for breakfast at 5 AM in the morning. It was an amazing time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I have to thank God for giving me this talent. So that I can bring a little happiness or even just a smile to someone over something I created. Then I’d like to thank my wife for never losing faith me durning the ups and downs that comes along with having your own company. My parents for recognizing my God given talent and pushing me to pursue a career in art. A special thanks to my big brother who also is an artist and helped me by opening the doors first and I snuck in behind him. I’d also like to thank my 3 kids for forcing to watch all the mind numbing shows they watched. Inspiring me to create stuff I wanted them to watch and play with. I’m joking of course but they did help me stay in touch with what kids were into at that time. I could’ve done without Tela Tubbies to be honest. LOL
