Meet Jaleesa & Shy Robinson | Studio Owner/Choreographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaleesa & Shy Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaleesa & Shy, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind our success is the ability to be able to create our different businesses and business ideas throughout each other and different personal experiences while continuing to build. But honestly what does success mean to you? Is it having all this money in the bank? What we feel success really entitles is getting up every day and doing it from your heart no matter what the result can actually be. Doing what you love. Speaking everything into existence because we all are creators and create our own paths. Believing in yourselves to have the strength and support to continue to strive for whatever it is you want. One thing that has always kept us successful is connecting and networking with others nationwide.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At Rise Dance Studio we train students from ages 5 to Senior Citizens in Hip Hop, Ballet, Jazz, Dancehall and Contemporary Modern. We focus a lot on the development of children but also allow others to express their emotions through the free movement of dance. At Rise we work a lot with the community and also hold classes through different recreational centers, libraries, and etc. We participate in different events and competitions all year round. Through Rise Dance Studio and getting shirts made for our different events inspired The Rise Line which is the athletic clothing line we have designed made to have the option to purchase stylish and comfortable fitness attire while working out or just for casual wear. Through battling the 2 different businesses and going through Covid shutting down a lot of business while having a small business of our own, we started to only purchase from small and black owned businesses which gave us the idea to start The Box of Excellence. The Box of Excellence is a box that we put together with different small samples from small and black owned businesses throughout the world. Not only did Covid teach us the strength of being a business owner, but it also showed us that there are so many different other businesses out there like us that we have no idea about so why not start networking with as many people as we can to help others succeed. Through that we have started an Annual Brunch to Success which is a black and white attire brunch filled with different business owners from different states coming together and sharing their stories and even given the opportunity to sell and promote their merchandise, all staff members or sponsors of the brunch are family members or individuals connected with throughout the community.

I can say what we are most proud of is all of the accomplishments above thorough the years so far, and the ability to be able to provide all of our different services to everyone and be able to leave an impact in anyone that we cross paths with. How we got to where we are professionally today is staying true to what we believe and keeping the drive and consistency in everything we do. Everything in life in manageable but never easy if you continue to want to improve, learn, and want more. Some of the many lessons that we have learned is not to let ourselves be too comfortable, slow down, plan in advance, and accept advice from others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We currently reside in South Florida; we love to eat so we would take them to one of our favorite spots for Tacos and Margaritas at Rocco’s Tacos. Definitely spend a day and ride the Ferri to Peanut Island. We love the vibe in Delray beach and love to eat at The Office they have great appetizers! City Place for a nice chill night out. Art Basel in Miami is one of our favorite experiences. One day cruise to the Bahamas is always a great idea. The beaches are always a fun time there are so many surrounding us. We love all of the different parks around, our favorite one to ground ourselves in is at the Okeeheelee Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to shout out our Parents: Dianne Robinson, Caressa James, and James Holley for being our support system and guiding us through every step we take. We would also love to shout out Mrs. Mosser and Dominick Boyd my childhood dance teachers for allowing me to have the opportunity to grow as a dancer and expand my dance path and career.
