We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Clemens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Video (as a communication medium) is so much more than the creative – it’s the messaging! Think about the last show or movie you watched and didn’t finish… It wasn’t because it didn’t look amazing or have the money behind it. I’d venture to say it was because you couldn’t connect with the story! It’s no different with video for marketing/advertising… Often times clients want to talk about what’s important to them, but more times than not, that’s not important to their clients…. If you confuse, you’ll lose. Think through how their message can solve a pain point for their client, create a strong narrative around that, THEN build the creative. Fancy camera work alone doesn’t work… Make sure who you hire cares more than you do about the message.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The “creative” industry is all I know, so maybe all industries are like this – but so much of your identity wrapped up in your product… You are your craft. One thing that has not only improved our work but helped create separation is inviting other creatives into our process… When we first started it was a one-man show. Slowly as clients changed and budgets allowed we were able to hire people who were better at certain production aspects, which allowed the product to improve and us to focus on directing and client relations.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Lakeland is the younger sibling to Tampa and Orlando… We so badly want to play in their sandbox – and we’re close!!! The food scene is coming up, but outside of that there isn’t a whole lot to do… For coffee, Hillcrest Coffee is a quaint historic home turned coffee shop that you’ve gotta check out. When it comes to food, look no further than Cuban Fusion cuisine Nineteen61 for good eats and drinks… Our lakes are gorgeous to walk and our downtown is full of local artisans, shops and restaurants. It’s really a great place to be where entrepreneurs are supported and encouraged.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our journey is a result of those who have gone before us and journey along side of us in entrepreneurship… All of us are chasing some sort of a dream and we are encouraged (especially in these times) seeing others who grind, pivot and persevere.
