We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Rose Fazekas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie Rose, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been a very artistic person with a passion towards creative endeavors. I am lucky enough to have an incredibly supportive family who have encouraged me to follow my dreams. I first realized I wanted to pursue a career in the arts growing up going to Universal Studios and seeing how magical the movie making process was. Specifically, I remember the ‘Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show’ changing my life and showing 8 year old me that a career in makeup was possible. Ever since then I have known that I needed to become a makeup artist because its what truly makes me happy and creatively fulfilled.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I consider my style of art and makeup to have many influences from film and drag culture. I grew up watching classic horror movies from the 40’s and 50’s and I feel as though much of my work reflects the aesthetics of those movies that raised me. I also became infatuated with drag queens at a very young age so I have grown up immersed in queer art. My hero is Elvira and I often take inspiration from her. I am most proud of my final special effects exam that I did at Cosmix makeup school. I created a drag queen bird character based off of the song ‘Copacabana’ by Barry Manilow. I am truly so proud of the final product especially considering how many challenges I faced while creating the prosthetic and costume. My biggest challenge that I’ve had to face while becoming a professional makeup artist has been my own self-doubt. I am a person who has always dealt with insecurities which have often held me back from taking risks. For so long I was scared to commit to becoming an artist because I thought I wasn’t talented enough. What always helps is having a strong support system who are there to remind me of my value.
I want people to associate me with horror and camp. I love mixing glamour, horror, and a cartoonish sensibility.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite places in South Florida often revolve around my love of horror and nerd culture. I spend a lot of time in comic book shops like A&M Comic Books and Tates Comics. My favorite stores in South Florida include Old Ghosts of Hollywood, Way Back When antique store, KnoWhere Toys and Arcade, and Odyssey Arcade. I also love going to the Villain Theater to see comedy shows and going to the Frost Science Museum.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been so supportive and I love them endlessly. My debate coach, Michael Norton, and my sign language teacher, Stephanie Coligan, from high school helped me become more confident and reassured me that I was talented enough to pursue my dream career of makeup. Charisma Adore, my teacher while studying makeup and drag mother, and Liz Scott, my special effects teacher, have become not only become my mentors but also my friends and I am so thankful to have them in my life.
