We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk-taking is as exciting as it is scary. Before I launched Frondezvous, I worked as (and still work as) an independent social media marketer. Initially, I held onto part-time jobs while developing my own business, but eventually had to take a risk and leave those part-time jobs to focus on growth. Starting Frondezvous felt like an even greater risk for me. I didn’t have a background in design or visual art before I embarked on this project. I taught myself 3D design and 3D printing from the ground up with some help from friends. But I knew this was a worthwhile risk after seeing customer response at the first markets I attended. Ultimately, risk has played a huge role in my life thus far but I’ve calculated those risks with plenty of research!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Frondezvous has offered me a lot of self-discovery as I’ve developed it. Visual art and design are new fields for me that have been thrilling to learn. I’m continuously learning and developing my skills and I’ve printed some designs along the way that I’m very proud of. I stand apart from other planter/home decor companies in that I love creating custom designs for people based on their wildest ideas. I love the intersection of digitally designed planters and green, earthy, natural plants. I love making planters that suit more nerdy and eclectic aesthetics and present houseplants as the works of art they are. Getting to this point has not been easy, but it’s been an enjoyable challenge. I’ve had to learn everything from scratch: 3D printing, design, market vending, you name it. I’m excited to keep learning and improving and creating an immersive experience for plant lovers of every background.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Orlando is home to some of the coolest neighborhoods; you could happily dedicate a day to each one! Our first stop would definitely be the Milk District to visit a couple of my favorite bars, Barley and Vine and Sideward Brewing as well as Sportstown and The Nook right up the street. Stasio’s on the corner has the best Italian sub in the world. I would also take them to the Mills 50/Virginia Ave. area, making stops at Li’l Indies, Thirsty Topher, and GB’s. We would definitely have to spend our Sunday in the Thornton Park area to take in a drag brunch at Island Time and get a philly cheesesteak from Cavo’s. For some chill time, we would have to make a stop at Leu Gardens and East End Market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My big shoutout goes to my best friend, Jerry. He sparked my interest in this project when he designed and printed a pot that said “Succs 2 Succ” for my favorite succulent plant. He has been there to answer my silly questions and to encourage me to try different approaches to my design and printer issues. I also owe so many thanks to my parents for all of their help and encouragement, to my friends Meg and Harry for being my ride-or-dies on market days, and to my partner Bob for being so solid while I discover my own path.
