We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamila Rowser and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamila, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The combination of my love for comics and Black women led me to start my own business. I love comics, but like society, the industry is racist and sexist and I wanted to do what I could to help change that. This desire led me to create Black Josei Press, a publishing company focused on publishing comics by and for Black and Brown women.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been creating content, working in tech and social, and running international organizations for almost a decade. All of my past experiences helped guide me to Black Josei Press. It was a natural evolution of the work that I’ve been doing for almost the past decade.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d start the day getting breakfast at Doce Provisions in Little Havana. We’ll spend the afternoon at Fairchild Botanical Gardens. But if it rains, our backup plan is the Frost Science Museum and PAMM. We’ll have dinner at Yardbird Southern Table and Bar then spend the evening hanging out in Wynwood at my favorite spots like Wood Tavern, Lucky Records, and Coyo Taco.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been really inspired by a lot of the work that POC comic creators and publishers are doing, and have been doing for decades. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. Not only because they inspired me and gave me the courage to write my own comics and start my own publishing company, but because they helped pave the way so that it could even happen.
