We had the good fortune of connecting with Janel Kilnisan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Miami FL . Born and Raised. I was raised by my mother who was a musician , who was always interested in art and culture . She was always documenting anything and everything we did . My grandfather owned his own Portrait studio in little Havana which is were I first developed film and printed my first photograph. at a very young age . I remember always being surround by art and culture . My aunt was into theater and singing . I was always surround by family members who expressed themselves creatively. I believe that my upbringing and background gave me the tools and experiences to allow myself to be creative and explore all creative outlets. My mother was extremely supportive in all my explorations , theater, art, music, dance and photography. Because of this I was able to explore and express myself with support and it was decently the stepping stones to the creative indivudual I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
MY ART its Authentic Storytelling Through my lens . I CAPTURE THOSE FLEETING MOMENTS – THE ONES THAT BLINK BY AND YOU MISS, CELEBRATING UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS AND SHOWCASING RAW EMOTION. BY OBSERVING THE WORLD THROUGH A ROMANTIC, WHIMSICAL, AND FEMININE LENS, I ADD MAGIC TO THE MUNDANE, FINDING UNEXPECTED CHARM IN EVERYDAY SCENES.
I believe what sets me apart is I’m not photographer looking for perfection , I will show you how beautiful your story is . How beautiful this time of life truly is . I’m a wild heart on a mission to capture your authentic moments with a whimsical twist. Through my lens, your precious memories become art – a story told in light and shadows.
I got where I am today by working hard , learning from other photographers, being open to criticism , being open to collaborating being open to learningfrom anyone willing to share some knowledge , exploring and creating my own visions. . Also putting myself out there and meeting lots of people . Lots of my clients have come from recommendations from other who have worked with me or have ,met me and if I didn’t put myself out there meeting networking and working I wouldn’t be where I am today .
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First we are definitely going to have some beautiful beach days. Spending the day in the sun and ocean . Taking them to some of my favorite beach spots in Key Biscayne . we would also spend the day kayaking in Key Biscayne .then I would defiantly take them to go see some live music at night would check if Tigre sounds had a event or see if anyone I love is playing at gramps or some of the other cool venues we have in miami . WE cant forget to go see art and check out musuems would also go to check out some art at the pamm and head to the frost museum . I definitely have to take them to one of my FAVORITE pizza spots Square Pie City and we couldn’t forget some cuban food as well hitting up Versailles for some cuban coffee and Pastilitos
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think that I have been fortunate to have a lot of support in my life from family and friends in my career and lifetime and for that I am very grateful .I would say that my mother was the first person in my life to show me what real love and support looks like . She was always supportive of me from a very young age. Always encouraging me to try new things and explore . She raised me to express myself creatively and freely . She pushed me when I needed to be pushed and she was there when I needed support or a shoulder. Creative careers can be hard to Strat and because she was musician she knew what it was like . She was always encoring me to pursue my photography and I know because I had a mother like her I am where I am today, doing what was meant to do and what my heart truly loves
