Meet Monica Kalpakian | ART consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Kalpakian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been an art researcher, patron, finder, and collector for decades. It wis my passion to spend time with artists in their studios and I would share my interest and discoveries with friends, who then would ask me if I could purchase a work for them as well: and then they would ask help with shipping, insuring , I would make the brokerage deals for them and talk on their behalf with shippers and handlers , it became a full time job , I found myself doing this everyday … I realized I should open a Bussiness and hire people to help me with all those logistic so I could keep finding the artists which is my forte.
What should our readers know about your business?
Spending someone else’s money is a total different responsibility than spending one’s own. When I buy art for myself , I can take more risk , when I purchase for a client I am cautious and also careful so that I can give a logical explanation and market research as for why I am making a decision. I learned to not be pushy even when I know its a good purchase, there is a fine line of being certain and being delicate about it . It is not a partnership, I offer a service.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the Bass museum, Pamm, museum, galleries , of course the beach and to eat outdoors, walk in South of Fifth h area, ride bicycles and go on a boat .
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Museum directos, galleries and artist who taught me each time I asked questions .
