We had the good fortune of connecting with JA’NET ADAMS and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JA’NET, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Before starting my business I did not know that someone would pay me to speak. That all changed one day when a church paid me $250 after speaking at one of their events! From there I started to believe that I could make a living off of sharing with others how I paid off $50,000 of debt in two years. I then began to work on my business the next two years waking up at 4am working to 7am to send emails out to perspective clients. I would then take my son to daycare, work my 8-5, come home and work on my business from 9pm-11pm. I knew I needed the shelter of my paycheck in order to get my business off the ground successfully.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I work with companies and higher ed institutions to advance the financial wellness of their employees and students! What sets me apart from other companies is that I am actually debt the one who has paid off debt and can show step by step of how I did it to the audience. Also I talk to the audience and not at them developing a deeper connection that leads to impact! What I am most proud of in my business is when I was able to speak on behalf of President Barack Obama’s White House and the Department of Education. I got to where I am in business today by focusing on my why. My why is to help people attract money to their lives so they can do more of what they want to do! That “want” may be to work a career that they love, start a business, travel the world, or just be able to spend more time with those they love. It was not easy. Over the last 10 years there have been a lot of doors shut in my face and many who did not see my value. I overcame those negatives by understanding that there is someone out there that needs me not to give up. Not to give up because I can help them financially break free. There have been a lot of lessons that I have learned along the way. One lesson that helped me the most in my business is learning to love the word “no.” When a person tells you know it helps you get closer to the person that will say ‘YES!” Never waste time on the “no’s.” What I want the world to know about my business is that I am extremely passionate about closing the wealth gap and when I work with employees or students my number 1 goal is to help them eliminate the financial stress in their lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend was coming to visit me I would have them visit some of my favorite spots. The first spot would be May Way restaurant where you can find the best pork buns! Then head downtown to Innovation Quarter and sit out on the grass, but only during the warm months. If they came in August I would highly recommend attending The National Black Theater Festival.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my mentor Morris Morrison who showed me how to get started as a speaker. He worked with me non-stop to help me understand the business and how to command a stage!
