We had the good fortune of connecting with JANNELY ESPINAL and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JANNELY, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Before taking a risk, I always answer this question: Will I regret not taking the risk? If the answer is yes, I go for it. Life is full of daily risks and you need to be willing to master the art of decision-making. Whether it is changing careers or letting go of a relationship, I always try to follow my gut. If something in my life feels stressful and affecting my mental health, I immediately know I need to make shifts and changes. During my late 20s, I changed careers, zip codes, and relationships, knowing there would be risks. In the end, it was all worth it. Risking a salary, the comfort of your place, or the stability of a job, sometimes is necessary to move forward to your true destiny.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The path to success is never easy. My background is in psychology and since my mid-20s I knew I had to make a shift. It took a lot of time researching the right resources, programs, mentors, and connections to grow professionally. It all starts with networking, writing that e-mail, and making that phone call. One of the toughest lessons I have learned as a journalist is to never promise something if you are not going to write about it. I have had to learn how to say no and move on. As a creative writer, I strive to paint a vivid image to my readers about the topics I write about. Thanks to my former editors, I have grown as a lifestyle, travel, fashion, beauty, and entertainment journalist. I believe it takes a village to make a master.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami is one of my favorite cities and as a local, I take pride in the rich history and unparalleled panoramic views we have. My best friends always contact me whenever they are in town because I always take them to the non-touristy areas if they want to explore local businesses. I am also the owner and social editor of the Instagram account @miamihiddengems. Through that account, I share my favorite spots to grab a bite or take a picture. Always with a tropical vibe in mind. However, if I had a last-minute visitor in town I will take them to the following places: For breakfast, go to Under the Mango Tree in South Beach’s fifth street. If you are looking for the ultimate history experience, visit Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. A stroll in Miracle Mile located at Coral Gables will whisk you away to a Mediterranean city. I will stop for a Cuban-inspired coffee at La Colada Gourmet located in Little Havana. Definitely, I will continue the tour at a hidden bar in South Beach called Minibar. It’s worth starting the happy-hour shenanigans at this spot. For amazing views, I will set up dinner at one of these spots: Serena Rooftop Restaurant, Joia Beach, or Baia Beach Club.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If it wasn’t for my former editors, Daniela Galvez and Ashley Jimenez, I would not be where I am now. Thanks to their patience, feedback, and support I have grown as a journalist and interviewer. When Daniela hired me at HOLA! USA, not only she gave me the opportunity to grow as a writer but also the ability to face my fears. Their guiding light will always follow me and thanks to them, I have landed other freelance projects.
