We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Matouk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One ideology that is inculcated as an entrepreneur is that you have to be “professional” or dress the part in situations where you deal with affluent people, I’ve learned the opposite. Especially with successful people, being myself and not putting on an act has opened a lot more doors for me. To a certain extent you should always dress clean, and for the occasion, but you do not have to wear a suit 24/7, especially if you live in Florida like me. The perfect example is if you watch any of my YouTube videos and then watch another fellow real estate agent’s videos. Be yourself, ride your own wave, and if some feels right, do it.
What should our readers know about your business?
I sell houses, and meeting people to sell houses to all through my social media. I spend $0 on client acquisition and thats due to my 4 year investment of time into social media. There are only a handful of people using social media platforms to market real estate, and of that handful, a few that are doing it well. One of my proudest moments was when my YouTube channel first got monetized, April of 2020, my monthly earnings was $40, it felt like $400,000 to me. The journey was not easy, but it also didn’t feel hard because I enjoyed every second of it, and it’s still not over yet. I’ve learned to ask for what you need to get the job done, no matter how much you might think it may be asking for too much. I’ve learned that being consistent even when things are quiet is the best way not to lose motivation.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week in South Florida is pretty long haha but if I had endless resources, day one of the trip I would take them on a boat or do jet skiing around Miami during the day, and while we were in the city head to the design district for dinner. Personally my favorite restaurant in Miami at the moment is Cote. You also need to have a crazy night in Miami, so another night maybe do a Mila dinner and then head to e11even until 4am. Now that my guest is completely exhausted I’d plan a nice brunch somewhere, honestly there are so many I can’t choose one. I’d want to give them the Florida experience, so I’d had to the sawgrass and take them on an airboat ride to see some alligators. If we needed an indoor/chill day checking out the frost museum is kinda cool. Gotta throw a chill beach day in there, my favorite beach is deerfield beach, simply because that’s where I grew up. Take them to the range in Markham Park to do some shooting, I mean it is Florida.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There were three major influences that made me who I am today. The first, Gillian, someone who I consider a second mother, At 19 she got me involved in real estate and helped me get my license and close my first deal, without that I’m not sure if I ever would’ve ended up in real estate. The second was another YouTube who had only been making videos for about a year, when I saw his real estate videos it clicked in my head ‘I can do this, and do this BETTER’. I won’t mention his name haha. The third is another unnamed person because I actually don’t remember their name. I was having a team meeting at my old real estate office in 2019, we were discussing what we could do to grow our businesses. One of the younger agents pointed out that TikTok could be a good way to market property, and everyone laughed, but I didn’t. I owe it to him for where I am on social media, because my timing on when I started was perfect.
