We had the good fortune of connecting with Javier Suarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Javier, why did you pursue a creative career?
From an early age I was drawn to the world of my parents, both are painters and they encouraged me from a very young age to approach that world. They wanted me to be a painter too, but music always caught my attention. We listened to classical music, jazz, blues, rock, and Spanish music, specifically flamenco.
That way I went to Music Art Conservatory of Pinar del Rio, Cuba; , and i learn the classical guitar for four years and then put on my own self-taught decision I entered without the world of flamenco guitar and at the same time the world of electric life.
Those were my first steps in this initiation in the musical world, later growing up in other schools bathes used guitar conservatory
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
About me: During my time in Cuba, I created the flamenco music trio Jaleos, together with the singer Raul Gonzalez, fusing flamenco music with Cuban and international rhythms. The group later on expanded its format and its repertoire towards an alternative musical approach, mixing genres such as blues, funk, rock, reggae and Cuban rhythms. This group later on received the “Best Fusion Group” award in the Festival Cuerda Viva, Cuba.
Additionally, he has been the co-founder of the Classical Guitar Orchestra A Tempo in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, and also the guitar duet Treze Cordas with Carlos Garcia, in Asturias, Spain.
In 2018, he entered the Cristina Heeren Flamenco Art Foundation, where he studied Intermediate and Advanced flamenco guitar until 2020, endorsed with said degree. I received classes at the Cristina Heeren Foundation from great flamenco guitar masters such as: Niño de Pura, Paco Cortes, Pedro Sierra and Pedro Barragan.
I received courses and masterclasses from guitarists such as Rafael Riqueni, Alfredo Lagos, Rafael Rodriguez “El Cabeza”, Juan Ramon Caro, among others.
Currently, I part of the flamenco and fusion music group “Son Flamenco” together with the singer La Negri and the dancer El Niño Uz, in Miami, USA.
I actively performs in Miami as a multi-styles solo professional guitarist, linking the character and sound of Spanish and Flamenco guitar in musical genres such as, flamenco, classic guitar, rumbas and sevillanas, american classical music, pop, modern, latin styles, reggae, country and more.
One of the things that most excites me about my artistic life is how people are able to understand what I try to convey through my instrument, my guitar, how many people excite me and ask me for information about my work, which it means that I surprisingly reach many of the emotions of people with my hands and my artistic work.
Life with so much mind challenges you and encourages you to take risks and I think that is what makes you grow and advance as an artist and Person.
One of the most important lessons I have learned in my life has been to do well and not look at who was always selflessly next and life will reward you for those acts.
What I most desire about the world and people, is that my work and my music reach their hearts and souls and that they enjoy it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In case a friend or family member visits Miami and my city, I would first give them a little tour of Coral Gables, my neighborhood, and take them to the miracle mile where we would eat a delicious pizza in Don Favio’s pizza. Then we would see each other a week vacation to the Keys where there are beautiful beaches and places to visit and enjoy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Now throughout my entire artistic career there are many people who have intervened and supported it, among them are my parents Juan Suarez and Delfina Rodriguez, my brother Juan Miguel, my wife and love of my life Yadely Yong and many other musicians with whom I have shared scenario and played in groups.
