We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Elaine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what do you want people to remember about you?
I’m sure people often think, “I wonder what people will remember me for?” At least I do. I think about this a lot, my legacy. Many people think of a legacy as a grand thing. When they think of a legacy they think of people who’ve had a major impact on themselves and society. Whether it be someone like Martin Luther King Jr, whose legacy was established in the civil rights movement, Michael Jackson, whose legacy was established in the entertainment industry, even the late Cicley Tyson who established a legacy in the theatrical world making her mark as a phenomenal actress, who people will talk about forever. All of these people were great, no doubt, their legacy will be talked about, televised, and celebrated for years to come. As much as I would appreciate being able to touch millions of people in creative ways and leave behind a grand legacy, I will still feel accomplished if my legacy was established only in the hearts of a few hundreds or just one. If I am able to inspire just one person to change the way they think about themselves and their craft, that is enough in my heart to feel a legacy was established. People don’t often forget the person who aided in the pivotal moment of their life, the one who helped change the literal trajectory of their life just by being themselves. That is what I want my legacy to be, that I properly and wholly operated in my purposes of not only showing others the freedom in being their creative self, fully, but actually showing them by showing up, being myself, creating without limits, and tearing the box down every single time life tried to trap me in one. That will be my legacy.
What should our readers know about your business?
My entrepreneurial journey has definitely been one for the books! People always chuckle when I tell them, this wasn’t on purpose, it just happened this way. Though I always knew my purpose for my life would be far greater than many probably thought for me, even what I thought for myself at times. I just never knew it would be in this way. I grew up in a home with educators, and it felt right to want to be a school teacher as well. God works in crazy ways, yes I became a teacher. Just not in the way I always thought I would when I was asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” as a child. Now, I am able to teach others how to be themselves wholly in a creative way. This hasn’t been an easy process at all. Many missed opportunities, a lot of no’s, more late nights than I can count, plenty of tears, and more money lost than I would like to admit. Nonetheless, the journey has been beautiful. It’s so cliché, but it’s so true when they say “trust your process.” There is literally nothing else you can do but show up and trust the decisions you make in your journey will lead you down the path you’re meant to be on. Now, with many businesses under my belt and a lot of failed “projects,” I have found what truly what works for me. Creating content has become a huge passion of mine, not only am I able to create dope content for myself, but I have wonderful clients who I create content for and just recently opened the first ever content creators’ studio of my hometown, Create Here Studio. There is nothing I would change about this journey! Every obstacle and even the ones to come, because it never gets easier, you just learn how to better handle it, has all shaped me into the creative and business owner I am able to operate as today.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I lived in Florida my whole life and I literally will never get tired of the beach! The atmosphere down by the water is truly unmatched. Aside from the beach, anywhere I can enjoy some good sushi or seafood, live music, and lots of laughs is where you can find me. I love being around people (just not large crowds), I’m big on “get together”, just the chance to be around other like-minded people and even the opposite, to feed off each other’s energy, be inspired, and recharge!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Though I have been inspired by MANY in my journey, my family plays a huge part! The constant encouragement, laughs, and love has been the driving force of my inspiration and creativity as of lately. And of course, the one who is operating this all, God! For blessing me immensely with creative abilities, ideas, and talents way beyond what I could have ever imagined.
