We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Fermin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffrey, how do you think about risk?
Starting a business, being self-made, starting from scratch, it sounds glamorous, the truth is that it’s not for the faint of heart. There’s a lot of lonely nights, people questioning you, family and friends teasing you. An entrepreneur’s journey has become pretty cliche, but it’s cliche because it’s true. I’m not saying I’ve had it better or worse than anyone, but I will say that my ability to take a leap without caring about failure has probably helped me out. Taking risks has been a big part of what my professional and personal journey has been all about. Living in different places, starting new companies, failing often, growing, learning. The risks I’ve taken and the lessons I’ve learned have blessed me with knowledge, grit, and fearlessness. I court risk and loss, but am more calculated nowadays, and that experience can’t be taught, it’s earned.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
New Theory Creative is a creative agency that focuses on standing out and disrupting in today’s digital world. Right now, every brand is fighting for attention — it even has a catchy name, the attention economy. We help brands break through all of the noise and disrupt their industry. At the moment, we offer creative services (photography, video, illustrationVR/AR, and small app development), website design and development, digital marketing, social media management, and e-commerce store creation. The pipedream is to expand on both the digital and creative realm, offering larger productions and even custom software development. For now, we’re the go-to agency for growth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week-long trip around Miami? There would be too much to do, first off, I have a Yelp list with nearly 100 places to eat, so I would narrow it down to things they prefer, but also, take them to the places I went to growing up. — we’re going to Palacio De Los Jugos, Pinolandia, and getting croquetas from Islas Canaria out in Kendall (the best croquetas in town. Period) . It’s likely that I will be hanging around City of Miami area, including Wynwood, Midtown, Overtown, Little Haiti, Design District, and Brickell. Obviously have to do the beach on a day that doesn’t include a mid-day thunderstorm. You’ll catch us at Melinda’s, Vice City Coffee, Yardbird, Eating House, Kush, Chef Adrienne’s … I mean, I can go for days, but if you or any friends need help deciding on something to do, let me know.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my “shoutout” to all of the young creatives that haven’t even started their journey, and really haven’t had any guidance. It’s been fun getting to know and work with some of the youngin’s that are up-and-cominng here in Miami. I’m glad to work alongside them and mentor them. It’s a crazy world, and business is still very cutthroat — no matter how progressive some of these brands are. Keep pursuing your passion and work on your craft, it’ll pay off. Oh, and make sure to always get paid a fair rate for your work.
