We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Higgins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted the opportunity to help families and businesses in transition and providing commercial and residential estate sale liquidation services was a unique business opportunity to achieve that goal. Whether relocating or retiring, rightsizing or recalibrating, our tag line is: “Helping Families. Selling Treasures. Having Fun.” That is exactly what we do.

Once someone has made the decision to work with us, we transform their home or commercial space into an upscale retail environment as our expert professional team facilitates “modern day treasure hunts” with our network of interested buyers who purchase anything and everything they can from you at fair market value. Our work can also include buyouts, private sales, and consignment opportunities.

As a 100% woman-owned, minority-owned small business, I thought it would be great to partner with a nationally recognized company like Blue Moon Estate Sales with an established network and loyalty program to grow their footprint in South Florida. In 2022, Blue Moon Estate Sales was recognized as one of the top 500 franchises in Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500® which gave me a lot of confidence that I had the infrastructure to be successful from the start.

What should our readers know about your business?
The average home contains 300,000 items, and in the process of relocating, retiring or selling a late loved ones’ estate, downsizing is often a necessity. One of the interesting aspects of our business is that our South Florida team helps drive sustainability. An Estate Sale helps keep home goods away from landfills and instead extends the use of that item by repurposing it.

We are well-positioned to be the “turnkey” solution for people looking to avoid multiple vendors and drawn out processes on eBay and other online sites. And not many companies can sell your car and your boat and your sterling silver all at once and get you paid in five days, but that’s the advantage of Blue Moon. We like to say “When you work with us, you’re a week away from the next chapter.”

One of the things that excited me about this business is the potential to be a disruptor. Most people think someone has to have an “estate” to have an “estate sale,” but the reality is that people every day are moving and looking to downsize or looking to liquidate items they just don’t have a need for anymore. We can sell virtually anything for anyone.

Finally, many interior designers are looking to leverage a mix of antiques in some of their more contemporary projects from vintage lighting to accessories like desks and side tables, so we see opportunities to partner with them. Demo is an emerging market as well. Our team can help create a salvage opportunity that reveals value in the rich detail representing the Spanish Revival Era, Victorian and 20th Century from wrought iron gates and panels, to bathroom fixtures and cabinet pulls.

There are also a lot of young people interested in “shopping vintage,” so we’ve expanded our electronic payment options to Square, PayPal’s Zettle, and Zelle to make it easier to shop with us or you can use our customized QR codes. We’re even leveraging TikTok and Instagram to spread the word about our sales!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I appreciate the distinct style, culture and architecture of this area. The beaches, world-class nightlife and unending shopping opportunities are just a few of the benefits of living in South Florida. The week would be filled with great seafood, quality beach time, a museum or concert for sure, and at least one cortado stop to keep us going!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was inspired by an Oscar Wilde quote — “The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim”. We have built the ability to sell rare and unique items, and those rare items often tell a story of their own. From the woman who traveled the world collecting jade elephant figurines to the poet with a first edition copy of The Importance of Being Earnest, rare items can have a profound effect for those who are fortunate to possess them in the future. I love the idea that we can help people get value from the past but also support buyers who want to be a part of that distinguished provenance.

Also, Julie Hall from the American Society of Liquidators who has fount of knowledge for so many in this field.
