We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Rollison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well, I had lost my IT job at the very beginning of Covid, March 2020, and there was no chance I would gain another position in the same industry during this period.
I really wanted to make this beach wrap I had thought about since Bali a few months earlier and thought I would give it a go. I was no sewer by any means and have never been creative in that sense before. My mother was even impressed.
When I did I loved it so much that I thought I would make one for my family and then for some of my closest friends, who also loved them.
I had a phone call from a new friend of mine asking what I was doing and when I told her and showed her she asked if I would make her one and she would buy it. I was stoked. My thought process was “Wow, something of mine, all mine, that I have done all on my very own and someone wants to pay me for it.”
So I set about making a few more and put them on my Instagram and Facebook and before I knew it more people were reaching out. And then here we are today. Wrapped In Love – Handmade.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My designs come from my heart. It is all about how I feel and more importantly how they make you, or me, feel when wearing them.
I chose the name because they are made with love and I want you to feel the love when you are wearing them. So it is Wrapped In Love.
I started with my beach wrap and then continued the name sake (wrap) throughout each new design. Now I have the kaftan wrap, crop wrap, tie wrap, tube wrap and new styles coming the dress wrap and throw wrap. I just love it.
It makes me feel so good on the inside when I think of a new style as it is my very own.
What makes me even more excited and happier is when my customers reach out to me and tell me how it makes them feel. Recently I have had the absolute pleasure of selling several wraps to a beautiful lady who has had a double mastectomy. Her words were full of gratitude as MY wraps made her feel so beautiful words couldn’t describe. She said that clothes don’t look or feel good after having this operation but somehow my wraps fell in the right position on her body and she felt so special wearing them.
To hear how it makes my customers feel is a blessing, on top of the goodness it makes me feel by creating them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I have lived on the Gold Coast for 30+ years now. Surprising though, I never went out around the coast during my marriage, however since becoming single 5 years ago I have enjoyed a lot more of the GC.
A day trip to Springbrook would definitely be on the cards. I love to walk through nature, hear all the beautiful sounds of birds and the insects and swim in the pool at the bottom, if it isn’t too cold.
Burleigh beach is my favourite, I would have to say because it is it’s own beach. Headlands on both ends with magnificent views.
Nightlife though. Has to be an evening at The Pink Flamingo. Nothing beats a spectacular show and they always have a great night out there.
For relaxation I would take her for a 1/2 day at Greenhouse Bathhouse with a lunch and of course a few champagnes each it is such a special day.
For a casual dinner we would have to go to “I Love Ramen” in Nobbys. All vegan and so delicious. Yum yum. If you haven’t tried it then you must.
But a dress up dinner at Balboa Italian would be a must. The atmosphere and decor makes you feel like you are in Italy.
Drinks and cocktails at The Collective on the deck, perfect for that after lunch girls afternoon.
Woo, I’m exhausted now.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was raised to definitely get a job and you will always have money coming in. So starting a business was never in my mindset. After my separation I set on a journey of self discovery and bettering myself to give back to the people in my life and be awakened especially to those you want in your life and you choose to spend your time with.
So Tony Robbins is the path I took. I have travelled around the world and met the most amazing, inspiring people. These people encourage me, support me and have helped me mould into this new version of myself that is able to take these risks and believed that I was on the right path, always, and made me trust that people will love what I have to give.
Although, my children and my family are my biggest support. They have been my models, shopped with me and help my fabrics, they have agreed or disagreed with my creative designs and are always there for me. Each member of my family has given to my business in their own way and I cannot thank each and every one of them.
