We had the good fortune of connecting with JerMari Alston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JerMari, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always had a calling to the arts for as long as I can remember. As a kid I loved drawing, painting, playing instruments, and movies. Art has also been a great way to express myself from an early age. I’ve always been outspoken, animated, and full of ideas so having creative outlets to play with was huge for me

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve gotten to where I am today professionally mostly through hard work and perseverance. It wasn’t easy at all, in fact when I first started out writing and recording music I was shot down by a lot of my peers before they even heard a single vocal. I was just an ambitious teenager with a laptop and a passion for music. At that point in time my biggest challenge was sound quality. I could song write but using a built in microphone on my laptop and recording into GarageBand left my records sounding completely less than desirable. I eventually overcame that by doing my research. I studied how to make my sound better, what equipment I needed, and what programs to use. Before I knew it I was recording in basement closet audio engineering my own tracks. I often cite that era of my career as the reason for where I am at now. It forced me to not make excuses and figure things out on my own. Fast forward to today and I’m more creative than ever due to now being able to produce and audio engineer my own songs. Having such creative control has allowed my imagination sonically to run wild. I think that’s what separates my music from others. You can hear my style of creativity not only in the vocals; but in the beat and mixing of my songs as well. I don’t sound like anybody else and nobody else sounds like me, and I love that. I think that also represents me and my brand in a nutshell as well. If I wanted the world to know anything about me and my music its that it represents risk taking, authenticity, and tenacity. My story is one of being an underdog that wanted to achieve greatness simply by just being himself; no gimmicks, no mirrors, no cap. Just life experiences and the way they have shaped me as a man.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If somebody was coming to visit I’d take them to a couple of places for a fun trip over the course of a week. First and foremost though we’d hit Vicky Bakery for some Pastelitos because thats a must if you visiting Miami. Once that’s happened there’s a couple places for food we would check out whether its for ice cream at Azucar, rib rolls from Flanigans, or getting Arepas from Super Arepa. If I listed all the food spots I’d hit we’d be here for hours. As far as drinks go there’s plenty of different places I like; for me its not so much where but what essential drinks I feel like they need to try. My top ones in no order are: cafecito, a Miami Vice cocktail, cafe con leche, an icee from A.C.’s, Jupiña, and the classic mojito. After that I’d hit different places to visit and hang out, starting with the beach. The beach is always a relaxing place to be at for me and lets face it, thats one of the reasons you wanted to visit anyway right? Other than the beach I’d definitely take them to the Wynwood walls, Vizcaya Gardens, Little Havana & Calle Ocho, Domino Park, ride an air boat in the everglades, and catch a Heat game.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve gotta give a shoutout to my friend Bryan Royster He’s played a pretty big role with me being a musician. When I have a song idea or a beat I’m working on and I want a second opinion he’s one of if not the first person I always go to. He’s been at every one of my shows, constantly introduces my music to new listeners, is always sharing new information he thinks could help my career, and has helped me out in times when I feel artistically defeated as well. You can’t tell my story whatsoever without including him and giving recognition.
