We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerrit Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jerrit, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal is to have food and beverages sold globally. This would catapult my career into having multiple restaurants, mainly concentrated in countries of Africa.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career started as an intern, contemplating if this is the career for me. The big move was when I left South Florida and moved to California for employment. This is where I was exposed to a new culinary world that really opened my eyes. I began working with amazing chefs at the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay property.
This job was very demanding and extremely hard work, but as I look back it definitely helped me grow more as a chef… skill wise and mentally. Challenges I have faced in this career is having to prove I belong. Naturally people see a black man with locs and assume I don’t belong but I am more than capable of being a great Chef.
I have faced some difficulties but I deserve to be here.
The lessons I have learned along the way, you have to own your product it represents you. You have to be held accountable.
So as a chef, what you put out for the guest says a lot about you… remember to put out the best no matter what and never be satisfied until it’s perfect.
What sets me apart from others, is me believing I can take simple food products and make it exceptional. What I want the world to know about my story, is nothing comes easy and you must work hard for what you want.
Your goals don’t care about your excuses, you must find a way to get the job done.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting me in South Florida, I would definitely spend a week introducing them to Haitian food and they absolutely must try the crab boils. We would definitely soak up a few rays of sunshine, at the beach.
Pass by a few scenic spots and end the week at Wynwood.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize my Mother. I wouldn’t be where I am today, without her.
My mother taught me to never give up and always pray.
