We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Liddell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from South Florida. Growing up in Lauderhill, FL in a single parent household with two younger brothers is not ideal but we loved our childhood. We have a phenomenal mother. She showed no weakness and back down for nothing. She was always a hard worker, patient and kind to us. We were allowed to be kids and make mistakes. She was always there. We grew up with such confidence because of her. With that confidence we took on everything with no fear. As a child anything beauty interest me. I was also great at drawing. I saw the world differently than others my age. At 7 years old my mom bought me a Smurf doll that had one line of hair on each side ( not much to work with but I made it work). I asked my mom to teach me to braid and the rest was history. That Smurf doll had a fresh do every week. I remember using regular scissor to cut my baby brother’s hair because I was sick of the way it looked. I became the family and neighborhood go to for all types of hairstyles. During puberty I became infatuated with skin. My skin was horrible and I had no idea why. Here it is, my mom and brothers didn’t have one pimple and my face was clustered with them. With much research and my mom’s wallet, I was able to get my skin clear before I left high school 2004. I enrolled into beauty school immediately after high school and became a licensed Esthetician in the state of Florida by 2006.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Bedroom Spa is a dream come true. Shortly after becoming an Esthetician I got pregnant with my first child. Aurelia, that little girl was and is so important to me. I could not see myself taking the risk on my career choice to be an on-call Esthetician. As a single mother, I was her only chance and I was not about to let her down which meant letting go my passion. I was more than ok with that decision. I went into full tunnel vision on providing for my baby. 2017, I met Jillian Flagler who reignited my flame. My passion for beauty was back and it was on. She did not let me stop until The Bedroom Spa was brought to life. COVID hit. It was horrible and a blessing at the same time. I was laid off from my job after 7 years. Going back to the beauty industry never died for me which is why I always renewed my license. I made sure that when I was ready to jump back in, I could. Suddenly faced with being laid-off with no plan, I remembered my license. I was turned down by some of the biggest names in the industry because I had zero experience. They had no idea what I possessed as a person. I applied for a local spa and was initially turned down for the same reason by the owner. I got another email from the same local spa asking me to come in. Carlene ( who I found out had just started working there as a manager) saw my resume, not knowing I was previously turned down by the owner called me in for an interview. Carlene said, “ I don’t know what it is but I have such a great feeling about you even though you have no experience”. She hired me on the spot and I started working that same day. The owner loved me and wish she could duplicate me. I ranked top Esthetician at her spa. After two years she moved in a different direction and offered me a suite in her new venture to do my own thing. The Bedroom Spa was born. I can’t say anything was hard. It all aligned for me to get back in my place.  I am in love with the beauty industry. The feeling I get from helping someone with services that come natural to me is indescribable. Have you ever won the lottery? Neither have I but I could only imagine that feeling being similar. I’ve learned that even with a license to do the job you can and will be turned down. I want the world to know that there is beauty in everything. You may stumble and may fall but you better get back up, dust yourself off and book your appointment at The Bedroom Spa. Our goal is to make self care priority. When you feel your best, you give your best. That energy is unmatched. We offer the best self-care services for men, women and children in Broward County, FL ranging from waxing, facials, and much more. Follow us at TheBedroomSpa on all platforms.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am huge on going to different places when I go out. It’s to the point where people calling or texting me about what they should do in my city. I used to drive to Key West, FL every Thursday with my children to eat at a place called, “Red Fish, Blue Fish”. They had the best fried snapper in the world. Unfortunately after COVID they shut down. I visit Dade County often, I have to say, “Rusty Pelican” has one of the best views of Miami. “BarOne” the food and vibe would take you to a different place. I have more exploring to do in West Palm Beach but, “ Four Art Garden” is breathtaking, you wouldn’t want to leave. Broward County is a smorgasbord. I love the vegan options here like “The Rabbit Hole”, and “ Krazy Vegan”. I’m waiting on Pinky Cole to bring , “ Slutty Vegan ” our way.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, Betty Liddell. There is no one on this planet that has helped me navigate through life more than she has. My grandmother Lizzie B Bullard, who helped me develop a spiritual connection. My baby brothers Jarvis Gray and Justin Liddell, who always had my back, we never argued, helped me make great decisions and have the best sibling relationship til this day. My Children , Aurelia and Bryce, who kept me soft in such a cruel world. Jillian Flagler who I met later on in life and didn’t know I needed. Thank you shorty.
