We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Captain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Many people are unaware of how much work goes into creating educational videos on Youtube. Two to three days to make them interesting, engaging and helpful
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Making educational aviation YouTube content isn’t easy. You have to break down a complicated technical system and explain it in an interesting and engaging way for the viewer. That makes it incredibly difficult, as you also have to remain professional and accurate, as the aviation geeks don’t forgive any mistakes.
And it has become harder and harder over the years as the retention span of the viewers has become less and less. Being a YouTube content creator for 8 years now, I have seen a sad trend that aviation content creators all have shifted towards “speculative air crash investigation” videos. Making up stuff, just to be the first who has upload a debrief on a recent crash.
Was it easy? No! Uploading a YouTube video every week requires a lot of discipline, motivation and strong willpower to never give up. The rewards only come in years later!
Lessons learned? Consistency is key. The harder your work, the higher you are rewarded. Financially but also in recognition and credibility. Some have become YouTube famous in a matter of days, but they also disappear as quickly.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in the heart of Munich, there are so many cool places to take my guests to.
First up, 6 am wakeup, we are going out for sports. There is an outdoor sports park near where I live. We’ll do 200 burpees, 400 situps and a 5km run. Now that my guest is warmed up, I’ll cool them down with a plunge into the river Isar. Followed by a smoothie and healthy breakfast at Wagners Juicery.
Then, grab the bikes from my cellar and cycle around the city. We would stop at the surfers’ wave in the English Garden. People can’t believe that we have a 10-foot surf wave in the city centre. Followed by a guided history tour hosted by one of my friends.
Then head to the Olympic stadium to watch a great concert. Coldplay for example 🙂
Then get a Pizza from one of many great Italian restaurants and jump on the Hackerbrücke, where you can enjoy some great sunset views whilst enjoying your Pizza,
Then head into one of many great nightclubs for a great night out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Tony Robbins had a huge impact on my life. I’ve read many books that he wrote, and other motivational coaches, which effectively inspired me to write my own book about helping people to stay motivated. The book shows how I’ve implemented checklists from the airline cockpit in everyday life. To become more focussed, disciplined and stay motivated.
