We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk taking is life. No risk no reward. Leaving New York to move to Florida was a huge risk both emotionally and financially. We opened an art gallery in Palm Beach, not really having a grasp on the market. We learned really quickly what our path should be, executed it and became successful
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was trained as a Graphic Designer so most of my images have a strong graphic element to them. I mostly focus on architectural themes. When I was a kid we could not afford color film and the expensive processing. My father taught me my darkroom skills and I went on to shoot only black and white images.
I spent decades in the advertising business as an art director and creative director. For ten years I was a partner in a small boutique marketing agency that did programs for fortune 500 companies in the Northeast. All I did in my limited spare time was take pictures.
When we moved to Florida I quickly realized that this was not a good market for photography so, in our gallery, we focused on paintings and sculpture. When the economy exploded in 2008, we were forced to close the gallery, I focused completely on my photography.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Culturally, Palm Beach county has blossomed. We have the Norton Museum, Morikami Gardens, The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County and many others, Three of our favorite spots
As a dedicated foodie, the number of great restaurants that have opened here is wonderful. Many restaurants from Manhattan have opened here which I’m sure makes the recent transplants very happy. My favorite without question, not from NYC, is Buccan in Palm Beach. Been going there since they opened ten years ago and it has been consistently excellent.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My business and life partner was instrumental in our path to success. I don’t do what she does and she doesn’t do what I do…complimentary skills always makes for a good personal and business relationship.
