We had the good fortune of connecting with Joerosa Davis, Ph.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joerosa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Having suffered from eczema for the past 20 years, I grew tired of prescription soap and lotion. As a result, I began to research the benefits of using herbs and essential oils to treat common skin issues and how I can translate that into bath and body products that would eliminate the need to use prescription medication to heal my eczema. From this concept, I formulated a bar of soap and began to test it on myself and friends/family that also suffer from eczema/psoriasis, The feedback was great so I wrote a business plan with outlining specific products and when I wanted to introduce them to the world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Professionally, I’ve been in the medical industry for 23 years. I graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and I hold an MBA in Healthcare Management and a Doctorate degree in Heath Administration from the University of Phoenix. My educational platform is what sets me apart from others running similar businesses. And while the knowledge can easily be obtained from extensive research, the ability to utilize my educational training in the formulation process for my products is definitely an advantage; customers feel comfort in knowing that the person behind the formulas has the knowledge to create products that work. Despite having a solid foundation to formulate, NONE of what we do is easy! But one thing about me is…I’m going to make sh*t happen! My drive and determination to help people is phenomenal. I thrive off knowing that my products help people overcome major skin issues that give them back the confidence they lost with not knowing which way to turn for help. This is accomplished without compromising the ingredients that go into our products just to benefit financially. I started this business to help people solve common skin issues; not for the money. Our goal is to educate people on the benefits of natural handmade products to alleviate common skin issues. I am a forever student, and as such I strive to continuously educate myself so that can I adjust to the demands of my target audience. When you use Luxe Lather, you know that the products are built for you with integrity, knowledge, and love.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ironically, I am a home body. If my best friend were visiting the area and I wanted to show her the best time ever, there are a few things that must be involved: food, the beach, a museum. We love to try new food so we would definitely accomplish that by eating at non-chain restaurants; we love supporting small business as they usually have the best food! We would definitely visit the beach as that is where we usually ground ourselves. It’s something about working out on the beach then sitting and listening to the sounds of the waves crashing against the sand; that does something to the soul. And I say museums or theaters because there is so much to learn from just reaching or watching things outside of the norm. These places provide an opportunity for you to connect with people that don’t necessarily look or act like what we are used to. This provides you with the ability to diversify your knowledge of other cultures. This is important in my business because it helps me to dig deep and think about ways to help all people outside of the traditional path we typically take. It’s all about learning and growing through not only yourself, but others.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been blessed with a small circle that encourages and supports me, but also provide me with honest feedback that helps my business to grow. My husband and children are my rock! They selflessly support me through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and push me to keep going! My sister Deborah is a walking billboard for Luxe Lather and supports me every step of the way. My best friend (more like my sister) Karen constantly encourages me to push beyond obstacles and that everything I want is within my reach! My Soror and friend Traci is my mental rock! When I am running around multi-tasking and unsure of how to proceed, she is always there to walk through the issues and help me come to a sensible decision; she is also a bonus mom to my boys. Last, but definitely not least, Celstina (Chef Tina Lee). She is such a positive light! She sat me down and told me every step I needed to take in order to get my business started. She explained every step to ensure I laid a solid operational foundation to run a successful business. There are many others that support me and I am grateful that God has placed everyone in my path on this journey.
