We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna Rua and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johanna, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
What makes me happy is helping others want better for their health.

My own health journey began in 2018 when I suddenly developed asthma, which led me down a path of deep research into not only the food we eat but also the environments we live and work in. I realized that so many of the products used in everyday spaces, offices, gyms, clinics, were filled with harmful chemicals that were affecting people’s well-being without them even knowing it.

There were moments I had to walk out of businesses because the air was so heavily saturated with toxic fumes. I remember thinking, this isn’t fair. It’s not fair for employees, guests, or anyone to sit through an entire day breathing in things that slowly chip away at their health. That realization is what inspired me to launch Fresh AF Cleaners, an eco-friendly commercial cleaning company committed to providing safer, healthier environments.

Helping people become more aware of what they’re exposed to daily, and empowering them to make cleaner, healthier choices, brings me real joy. Because once you experience what true wellness feels like, you want that for everyone around you too.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Fresh AF Cleaners was born from purpose, not just profit.

After overcoming my own health issues, I became deeply aware of how much our environment impacts our health. I started paying attention to not just what I was putting in my body but also what I was breathing in every day. I realized that many commercial cleaning companies were using toxic chemicals that lingered in the air, affecting not just workers, but guests, clients, and staff. That’s when the vision for Fresh AF Cleaners came to life.

We are a minority women-owned commercial cleaning company based in Brickell and serving the greater Miami area. What sets us apart is our commitment to eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning methods that support both human health and the environment. We use cutting-edge technology like aqueous ozone systems that clean and disinfect without harmful chemicals saving our clients money while creating a safer workspace.

Was the journey easy? Absolutely not. Starting a business from scratch especially in a saturated market meant facing doubt, financial risk, and the need to constantly educate others on why green cleaning matters. I overcame those challenges through faith, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose. Every time I wanted to give up, I reminded myself why I started: to create spaces that support healing and wellness, not harm.

I’m most proud of staying true to my values and building a brand that puts people first. This isn’t just a cleaning company, it’s a movement for healthier living.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know, it’s that you don’t have to sacrifice your health for cleanliness or convenience. You can choose better and that’s exactly what Fresh AF Cleaners stands for.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting Miami for the week, I’d definitely want them to experience a little bit of everything, great food, chill vibes, some culture, and of course, some fun nightlife.

Since I’m originally from New Jersey, one of my first missions when I moved down here was to find pizza that reminded me of home and I found it at Gramps in Wynwood, because who doesn’t love a good pizza? Their NY-style slices hit the spot every time and the whole Wynwood vibe is unmatched. Art, music, cool people, it’s a must-see.

We’d also hit up Coyo Taco, especially on a Monday night. Their tacos are fire, but the hidden backroom after-party is the real treat. It’s a whole vibe and always a good time if you’re looking for something a little more underground.

The rest of the week would be more laid-back. I love low-key restaurants on the water, places where you can enjoy good food, good company, and a peaceful view. Some of my go-to spots are Juniper on the Water, Habibi on the River, or grabbing brunch in Coconut Grove and walking around the marina.

We’d sprinkle in a beach day or two, living close to the ocean has its perks, and of course we’d catch sunset.

Miami has so much energy and culture, but for me, it’s all about finding that balance between fun and chill. And that’s the kind of experience I’d want to share. It’s refreshing living in paradise, we are truly blessed.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate my shoutout to God.

If it wasn’t for Him, I wouldn’t be here today. Through every challenge, setback, and breakthrough, it’s been my faith that has carried me. God has given me the strength, courage, and clarity to keep moving forward, even when I couldn’t see the path ahead.

There were times when I wanted to give up, but I prayed for guidance, and somehow, the right opportunity, person, or message would show up exactly when I needed it. I truly believe that every door that closed was redirecting me to something greater.

So before I credit anything else, my business, my resilience, or even my growth, I have to credit the One who’s been guiding me through it all. My story is a reflection of His grace and purpose.
