We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonnia Whyms and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonnia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue a creative career because as a young child I always loved craft work and being around my grandmother (Deceased) who was a Straw Vendor at our local Straw Market here in Nassau, Bahamas she was always creating straw bags and crocheted items, so the love of craft grew on me and I decided to start a small business and do what I love for a living.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Crochet is a very intricate work of art that cannot be replicated by machine, so each stitch I create is handmade neatly with love! There are millions of talented crochet artists out there, but what sets me apart from them is my neat stitches and color combinations. I use a mixture of bright and neutral colors in my pieces. I am very proud to know that I’m an inspiration to others out there especially the younger generation who are interested in learning this beautiful craft and I’m so excited to see how far my gift can take me because you never know who is watching when you post and share your creations. I never really posted consistently in the past because I thought people wouldn’t like my pieces, but I prayed on it and I’m being more consistent and I have seen a huge difference in terms of exposure! I also had the opportunity to be featured in my local newspaper “The Tribune ” a few months back as well, so things are really taking a turn for the better and I am so grateful for that. Getting to this point in my small business was definitely not easy in the beginning, so many times I wanted to just give up, but like I said through prayers and my group of supporters pushing me I overcame those challenges. Throughout this journey as an entrepreneur I’ve learned to be patient because things won’t always happen on your time, you have to be persistent, consistent and have that mindset to overcome challenges when you least expect it, but hard work and being patient really pays off in the end. Krochet Obsession is still growing and everyday is a learning experience, I’m looking forward to expanding my brand and hoping to get a storefront one day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would truly say that I would take them to Atlantis Bahamas for a week long trip. Atlantis has a fun water park that you can spend hours enjoying and it also has an Aquarium to view the most beautiful sea creatures. One of the best restaurants I would recommend to them is Oh Andros located on Fish Fry on West Bay Street, their food is phenomenal! We would have a blast checking out different night clubs over Paradise Island and sight seeing throughout the day or even beach day, this would definitely be a trip to remember. In my opinion the Caribbean islands are one of the most beautiful places to visit and their cultures are so unique and different.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shout out to my Father and step mom, my aunts, uncles, my sisters , my brother-in-law, cousin, my boyfriend and my best friend and her family who also became family to me. I also want to shout out Nadine and Fina from Craft Cottage Bahamas, I had the opportunity to meet these two beautiful souls during the start of my journey and they supported me all the way through. My circle of supporters encouraged me daily and motivated me to keep pushing and believing in myself and my dreams and I’m truly grateful for them. Most of all I want to give the biggest shout out to the Most High, because without him none of this would be possible, he has been so faithful to me every step of the way even when I doubted myself and wanted to give up because I felt like all was lost.
