We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Rondon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jose, why did you pursue a creative career?
Because I was born seeing the world differently—and I never stopped.

When I was in preschool, my teacher called me “unteachable” because I painted a bee pink and blue. I told my mom, “It’s not a real bee—it’s a drawing. And I think bees look better in pink and blue.” That’s been my mindset ever since: creativity isn’t about rules—it’s about imagination, emotion, and truth.

I’ve always been drawn to media, color, and story. I started in radio at 16, worked in TV, studied PR and advertising, and discovered photography along the way. But more than the platforms, I fell in love with the power of creating something meaningful—and making people feel seen.

After moving to the U.S., I struggled to find a place where I could fully express myself—so I built one. I’ve been creating ever since. For me, this isn’t just a job. It’s who I am. My creativity is how I connect, how I heal, and how I help others shine.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is all about helping people feel powerful, seen, and proud of who they are—especially those who’ve been overlooked. I specialize in photography and brand-building for queer creatives, performers, and small business owners. What sets me apart is how I connect: I don’t just take a photo—I create a moment where someone feels unstoppable.

My journey wasn’t easy. I came to the U.S. with no English, worked unpaid, and started from the bottom. But I believed in my story. I rebuilt my life, opened my studio, and launched ThoJo Group with my husband to help others rise too.

What I’ve learned is simple: your difference is your strength. I’m not here to be the star—I’m here to be the guide. And I’m proud to help others own their story and shine.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s no way I’d be where I am without community.

First, my mom—who always reminded me that being different wasn’t a flaw, it was a gift. From the moment I painted that pink and blue bee, she defended my creativity and taught me to stand by it.

Then, my chosen family—the LGBTQ+ artists, performers, and immigrants in Chicago who welcomed me when I had nothing. We created magic together, not for money, but out of love. That spirit still lives in everything I do.

Of course, my husband Thomas—my partner in life and business. He believed in me before I did. With over 20 years of experience in marketing, he brings the structure and strategy that balances my vision. ThoJo Group wouldn’t exist without his wisdom and heart.

And finally, a shoutout to every friend, client, and mentor who saw something in me, shared a kind word, gave advice, or simply trusted me with their story. That trust changed my life—and I carry it into every project I take on.
