We had the good fortune of connecting with JOSHUA BANNER and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JOSHUA, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking calculated risks (considering risk vs. reward) is the hallmark of entrepreneurship. Before I started my first business, big risks scared me. I was raised to respect the value of a dollar and a hard day’s work. When I decided in college to pursue medicine because I loved biology, I also did it because it was a safe choice. It was a long path, and originally I wanted to be a biological engineer, but medicine seemed more like a guaranteed route to financial security and a better future.

Later, after completing 3 years of medical school, I left a guaranteed M.D. degree and physician future to start an E-commerce business after my M.B.A. Many said it was crazy and my medical school roommate told me “It’s so risky, just finish your M.D.” as aspiring doctors like certainty, evidence based practice of course. In medicine, risks can be high; someone’s life can be in your hands. But, taking a risk to walk away from a guaranteed future, because you are not happy can be hard too.

I spent almost a whole year weighing the pros and cons of leaving medicine to pursue my new venture, conjuring up what the future me might value more. Would it be money? Time? Health? Knowledge? Making a difference? Ultimately, one evening while sitting on the window sill of an old house in Belgrade, Serbia…5 months into what was to have only been a 2 month trip to SE Asia, I realized the answer.

If I was going to take the risk of forging a new way and leaving medicine, the reward had to be worth it. The risk/reward ratio had to make sense. For me, the reward was taking back my time and freedom (my non-renewable resource), while still making a good living. I wanted time to travel and to be my own boss. Ten years later, my entrepreneur wife and I have visited over 50 countries while operating two successful businesses in the process…we continue to take calculated risks to further our personal and professional goals.

Today, I am helping others transition outside of the typical 9-5 and find their own type of financial freedom with my new venture Real Life Trading UK & Europe (https://www.reallifetrading.co.uk/online-courses). We offer free education, coaching, mentorship, and curriculum to help enrich lives and spread financial literacy.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After 10 years running a large E-commerce business that had it’s supply chain derailed by COVID-19, I decided to pursue a new venture in a topic that I am passionate about: Financial Literacy. I wanted to have a “realized gain” and take the hard-earned profits from my E-commerce venture and “make my money work for me,” rather than the other way around.

Financial Literacy, which leads to Financial Independence, is what led me to get involved with the fantastic team at Real Life Trading and start a new venture in Europe: Real Life Trading UK & Europe (www.RealLifeTrading.co.uk).

The Real Life Trading global brand encompasses the core characteristics of Financial Literacy and Independence. Our mission is to enrich lives with mentally liberating education and to help our clients achieve financial independence…and most of it is totally for FREE!!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Must hit spots include Miami Beach and Wynwood.

It’s always nice to check out the new bars in downtown/Wynwood/Midtown along with a few bites. Roam around, it’s bigger than ever and see the street art too. Hit up a brewery as well if you have the time.

Lunch at Sushi Erika on the bridge to North Beach before drinks at The Broken Shaker will set you up well for a stroll around South Beach after. Don’t forget the boardwalk, Lummus park and the sand, amongst all the people watching.

Dinner at Macchialina in South Beach, where a tasting menu completes the ultimate Miami day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my mother, Fran. Throughout my life she has always supported me and helped me accomplish my goals—through listening and gentle nagging! Thanks for being a guiding light and for believing in me when many were skeptical.
