We had the good fortune of connecting with Kael Baez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kael, what are you inspired by?
A morning sunrise that glistens in the morning dew and warms the cool breeze of a drowsy ocean. I am inspired by the beauty of the life we share, it ignites a will in me to create and become a part of the collective masterpiece of the world. Being able break parameters and discover new ways of doing things is a very exhilarating journey that leads to all sorts of projects. I therefore consistently collaborate with a multitude of artists and disciplines, keeping my innovation sharp and consistent. Even just the reminder that this life isn’t eternal inspires me to take action in the now.

Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’ve been dancing since I was a little kid, my expertise has always been improvisation. I would watch music videos by Justin Timberlake and learn the entire choreography. Then in high school I found a love for music and began playing piano with school mates. I taught myself guitar and took a few singing lessons from a family friend, thus beginning my music career. I decided to study music in college and thoroughly enjoyed it. I used all my free time to compose pieces and experiment with the school equipment. I would have countless jams with other musicians and began identifying my voice. I started leaning more towards the style of Jazz and I couldn’t be more grateful for it, jazz opened new doors for compositions and improvisations. I then started to realize that what I truly wanted to focus on was composing music for films, I felt that that career choice was going to give me the most freedom to create and revolutionize my sound. So after I graduated I began to create my first own short film and composed the entire music for it. I very much enjoyed the process of composing so I delved into collaborating with dancers and creating music for their performances. I am proud that I continued to expand my horizons and stayed open to different possibilities. Getting to where I am today has been challenging but completely worth it, putting in hours into practice and trials has always been rewarding. Anyone who truly wants to live the life of an artist must be fearless and persistent.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have never been someone who goes out often so I don’t think I know the best spots in the city, I value my time alone and in my own space. But from what I have seen, my favorite places are Wynwood for its artistic environment, South Beach has a great group of acrobats, athletes, and dancers that you can socialize with, a delicious place to eat is PLANTA, and if you like latin dancing, I recommend Ball and Chain in Calle Ocho
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve always felt very thankful for the eastern culture of meditation, yoga, and spirituality. A book that really opened my eyes was “Autobiography of a Yogi”, it showed me that there’s more to life than the material and physical. I was able to find peace in myself and create a healthy environment around me due to my newfound discoveries. Musically the most prolific influence in my work is the band Radiohead. Their versatility in styles and genres really pushes me to my limits as a musician and helps me develop an ear for the abnormal. In terms of movement, the dancers that have laid out the path for me are Les Twins. I am always in awe by their work ethic, technical ability and unbeatable improvisation. I can say that these are the main credits for what has helped develop my creative self.
