We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamilah Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kamilah, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of Birth Work South Florida and Mother Earth Cloth Diaper Service is the commitment to my mission. My current mission is to normalize the basics. As parents we are bombarded with “hot product must haves…” and “the new best parenting book of all times”. I have learned that in a world full of options the most simple option of them all is most likely the best. I embody this in my approach to business, parenting, and educating clients or potential doulas.

In order to be a successful innovator you must know the basics of the product you hope to improve. Birth Work South Florida presents breastfeeding education, childbirth education, postpartum and infant care classes, Postpartum Doula Certification and so much more in such a simplistic way that you have a beautiful learning experience without the complications of smoke and mirrors. Mother Earth Cloth Diaper Service provides a complete cloth diaper service. We also provide Cloth Diapering 101 Classes to educate parents about the benefits of cloth. The ease of using cloth. The basics of one of your babies basic needs. It all seems too easy to just use disposable diapers until you learn it can take more than 400 years for one disposable diaper to break down in a land field. Or that on average a baby uses 10 diapers a day for 2.5 years of their life. You do the math….. Why contribute to the world of waste when you can simply use cloth diapers.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets you apart from others? What sets Birth Work South Florida apart for others is our ability to present and utilize evidence based information in a way that’s not intimidating or overwhelming.

what you are most proud of or excited about?
Birth Work South Florida is most excited about our recent partnership with United Way of Broward County. We value all connections we have. This particular one was unexpected but very welcomed.

How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy?
Business-wise Im are able to thrive due to my dive and commitment to Birth Work South Florida and Mother Earth Cloth Diaper service mission. Its easy because its something we truly believe in and practice in real life.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
I have learned that its important to stick with it. If its an idea that you believe in don’t let anyone discourage you. Dedicate yourself until you feel the need to make changes.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I would like everyone to know that both companies service the tri-county South Florida areas. Birth Work South Florida now has a Postpartum Doula Certification program. No matter your experience we can teach everything you need to know to service your client in their 4th trimester.

I would also like everyone to know that this work is done out of love. I am driven by the love that I can pour into my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my so many places and so little time! I have found it so hard to live and work in a place where people come to vacation. But some of my must go place would be Piman Bouk in little Haiti (get the red snapper and thank me later!), Ginger Bay in Hollywood(order anything on the menu but go on a live band night, grab and drink and vibe) , and Aruba beach house in Fort Lauderdale ( go on a live band night and order the calamari take a walk on the beach at night after dinner. if your are lucky during June and July and may get to see the bioluminescence).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate all that I do to my two boys Naresh and Nasir. They keep me grounded when I’m overwhelmed with task and ideas. They cheer me on when I’m exhausted. I appreciate them for giving me the title of mother. I value that title the most. I have the guidance and mentorship of some of the most amazing midwifes in South Florida. Mirlande Casseuss CLM is one of the best. She is a wealth of knowledge and will always make time to let me pick her brain. I also have the support of fellow business owners. Sanyani Edwards and Imani Wallace they are great sounding boards and mentors when it come to doing business and life. I’m grateful to have a vast circle of knowledgeable people.
