We had the good fortune of connecting with Karyn Rosenberg, LCSW, PMH-C and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karyn, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance is something that is critical to the life of a psychotherapist. Managing my own practice, providing support to my clients, and being present for my husband and my two daughters incorporates all of the aspects of a healthy work life balance. When I first started my practice, my children were not born. During the early years, I did several speaking engagements a week, as well as seeing clients late at night. Once I had my children, I began to become more selective of where my time was spent and that it was ok to say no. Self-care is a critical part of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Not only do I discuss the importance of self-care to my clients, I practice it myself. Making exercise a priority insures that I am doing something for myself, thereby enabling me to be more present for my family and my practice. Part of self-care has been spending time doing things that I enjoy and are aspects of my personal identity. Exercise, reading, and my love of live music. I am even teaching myself the bass guitar! As my husband and I are getting ready to become empty nesters, how we will be spending time will look different. Meaning and purpose both in relationships, time spent, and intention are all vital parts of work life balance.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am lucky to be doing exactly what I have always wanted to do since the age of 10. I have wanted to be a psychotherapist for as long as I remember. I specialize in grief/loss/trauma, fertility and certified in perinatal mental health. I am also a certified hypnotherapist and trauma trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) I work with every age from young children through adults. I have seen clients at the worst of moments enduring the unimaginable, and being a small part of their healing journey is.a true gift, and gives me very meaningful moments in my practice. Starting a private practice was a risk, but worth it. Many people tried to say the market is saturated with clinicians but I have always taken an abundance mindset. The right clients find the right therapists! I have always been professional, ethical, and provide my clients the best version of myself that I can. I think that having been in the community for a long time maintaining a positive professional reputation has helped me stand out as a leader and specialist in my field.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
How lucky are we to live where people vacation! I would encourage my friend to visit during season when we have the best weather! The beach is a huge draw to South Florida so that is a must! I especially love getting up early and catching a beautiful Florida sunrise. Then a trip to The Seed for coffee and pastry.. As a vegan and self-proclaimed foodie, I would include some of my favorite spots of course! I especially love Christopher’s Kitchen, Darbster, and Planta and would include them on the vegan foodie tour! For shopping we would check out some of the malls in the area including a trip to Aventura Mall or Town Center.. For live music including some incredible rock and roll tribute bands, we would check out some of my favorite venues like Funky Biscuit, Crazy Uncle Mike’s and Boca Black Box. Finally, I would be happy to host her in my home, but would encourage her to stay at The Boca Raton because it’s an incredible hotel resort, and then we can enjoy time together at their beautiful property.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today without my mentor, Myra Clark-Foster, LPCC. She took a chance on me while I was in graduate school working on my masters in social work at The Ohio State University. I applied for a job at Mount Carmel Hospice as a grief counselor. She took a chance on me having no experience in the grief and loss world. That opportunity set the trajectory for my entire career. From seven years working in the Hospice movement, to being in private practice as a grief and loss therapist since 1999. A full circe moment was Myra asking me to be a contributing author in a professional book on grief! ( Understanding the journey: A lifespan approach to working with grieving people, Charles C Thomas Publisher, Ltd.) I truly couldn’t shoutout Myra any louder! I am eternally grateful!
