We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Kissik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To choose the path of an artist is to embrace career risk-taking not as a flaw, but as a fundamental pillar of existence. It’s a conscious decision to trade the perceived safety of a conventional career for the boundless possibilities of self-direction. It’s understanding that while the road may be less traveled and certainly less predictable, the journey itself—fueled by passion, driven by purpose, and measured in moments of profound creative fulfillment—is the ultimate reward.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is best characterized as urban constructivism, a practice where I construct intricate, multi-layered paintings from unconventional materials and my own manipulated imagery. My process often involves a seamless integration of photography and assemblage, with the very construction of the piece hinting at the inherent materiality of its subject. I meticulously layer various mediums to build both tactile richness and conceptual depth. Through deliberate manipulation of perspective and the thoughtful weaving of unexpected patterns, my compositions intensify feelings and redefine perceived spaces. My core inspirations draw from the Bauhaus movement, architectural forms, historical narratives, the exploration of space, principles of physics, and philosophical inquiry.

My foundational artistic education was at The Museum School Boston and Tufts University, culminating in a prestigious 5th-year Traveling Scholar Recipient honor. This period was instrumental in shaping my artistic identity, fostering an open approach that embraced all disciplines and revealed the boundless potential for creativity in every facet of existence. I further refined my practice during a summer intensive program at the Slade School of Art, London. My ongoing intellectual curiosity in physics has blossomed into a compelling collaboration with CERN’s art@CMS program, a partnership that consistently fuels my creative explorations. Travel and direct cultural immersion remain vital sources of inspiration.

My FUNDAMENTAL FACTORIES™ works represent a continuation of my career-long engagement with architecture and industry. These pieces playfully yet poignantly investigate the idea that anything, including our deepest aspirations, can be manufactured or mass-produced. Echoing the meticulous approach of Charles Sheeler (1883-1965), I employ my own photography as the conceptual blueprint for these contemporary “castles of industry.” I deliberately label these factories as “secular fetishes,” prompting critical reflection on the true objects of our worship in an industrialized society. I believe art is far more than a mere reflection of our environment; it holds the powerful capacity to initiate and forge solutions, bridging the gap between imagination and physical reality. Indeed, every tangible creation originates from an idea.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My childhood best friend, Chantelle, and I, who have shared a bond since we were seven, recently reunited for a glorious long weekend in South Beach. Our adventure began with an idyllic sunset cocktail session at Monty’s, the perfect vibrant prelude to our escape.

The next morning, we indulged in a delightful brunch at Café A la Folie on Espanola Way, soaking in the charming, bustling atmosphere. Afterward, the spectacular beach beckoned, offering hours of relaxation and refreshing swims, followed by a leisurely stroll along the iconic boardwalk. That evening, we savored dinner on Lincoln Road, the prime spot for unparalleled people-watching, before rounding out the night with refreshing pints at The Abbey Brewery.

Our final morning started with a delicious breakfast at The Big Pink, followed by an excursion to South Pointe Park, where the ocean views were truly breathtaking. If only we had more time, I would have loved to introduce Chantelle to the raw, spectacular beauty of the Everglades, a truly visually stimulating natural wonder. I also adore the hidden tranquility of various hotel courtyards and the vibrant energy of rooftop bars along Ocean Drive for dinner and unforgettable beach sunsets. And of course, no visit is complete without the quintessential Cuban coffee and empanadas!

South Beach also holds a special place in my heart for its rich cultural offerings. I always find inspiration at the Wolfsonian Museum, the Bass, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). And, of course, a visit to The Robert Fontaine Gallery, who has proudly represented my work since 2012, is a must.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to express my deepest gratitude to several pivotal figures and organizations who have profoundly shaped my artistic journey.

First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Jim Fleck, a remarkable philanthropist from Toronto. His visionary acquisition of my entire graduate exhibition directly from Tufts/SMFA Boston’s Alpha Gallery was not just a purchase; it was a profound vote of confidence that launched my career. Beyond that foundational moment, Jim has remained a steadfast supporter and cherished friend, perpetually enriching my life through his passion for art and invaluable mentorship.

My sincere appreciation also goes to Joanna Fink, the discerning director of Alpha Gallery. Joanna gave me the incredible opportunity of my first major exhibition, a crucial stepping stone, and she has continued to be an unwavering champion of my artwork ever since.

Finally, I am immensely grateful to Oolite Arts in Miami. My nine-year residency there was transformative, providing an essential space for growth and experimentation. Even now, I am proud to maintain an ongoing and dynamic relationship with Oolite Arts as an artist, a testament to their enduring commitment to fostering creative talent. Nancy Gifford is another person I should mention. A great artist, friend , and mentor. We are currently working on a project together.
