We had the good fortune of connecting with Keeana Kee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keeana, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Be yourself, do your own thing and work hard. The right people – the ones who really belong in your life – will come to you. and stay.” I really love this quote I heard from Will Smith. It helps me stay strong whenever someone let’s me down, inspires me to work harder every day. It’s a great reminder that we all are unique and should never stop working on what we love.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my music. It’s genre is Exotic Pop. I love calling it that because it’s combination of the heat of an exotic Spanish beach, the rhythm and soul of an African desert and my pure love for music and dance. I love to travel and to learn about different cultures. I create my songs from the emotions I feel. The multicultural upbringing is what separates me from others. I was born and raised in Eastern Europe then moved to England as a teenager. I’ve been blessed to be able to spend lots of time in Italy, Paris, Spain, South Africa, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon before settling in the USA. Being introduced to so many different cultures made me more versatile. I’ve worked with many artists, producers and DJs around the world and continue looking for new collaborations. Some of my collaborations include the multi-platinum Grammy winning producer Maffio, Latin rapper Kid G and Italian DJ Luca Bissori. I’m a very open-minded person as well as a member and an advocate for LGBTQ+ community. I stand for the essential rights for myself and other members. I don’t take injustice lightly and I can’t stand any kind of discrimination and prejudice against people in all it’s ways. You have to be fearless to fight for what you believe is right. I believe you can reach your goals by never quitting, hard work and discipline. Of course we all have those times when doubting ourselves can get in the way but YOU are the one who must believe in yourself first, do not expect that from others. I got where I am today because I strongly believe in myself and what I want to achieve. I’ve made a decision to come to the USA and chose to pursue music as my career. Nothing comes easy and there is no shortcuts to any success, but as long as I keep moving, I believe I can get there. The challenges for me were very different at times. There could be simple disagreements with a team member about writing or production of the music or cases where I was being judged by someone I worked with when they found out that I am an LGBTQ member and they didn’t want their name to be associated with that so I had to quit projects. Sometimes there were issues with coming to an agreement about legal parts of the business with people I work with. Anyways, I’m still learning how to deal with all the different aspects of the entertainment business and try not to get discouraged if something isn’t going the way I wish it would. I think being able to adjust and being a quick learner is what I am most proud of. My art isn’t only my music. It’s also in the artworks for my songs, photography, my music videos. I love to have the creative control over everything I do. I come up with the ideas for my music videos, take part in production and I even work on the postproduction. It’s not easy but I love every second of it! I like learning new things so I enjoy to be involved in production of my songs as well as mixing and mastering processes of my music. I’d love for my audience to get inspired by my music, get energized and motivated. I put all my heart in writing and recording it. I share a little bit of my soul with every person who listens. Music is healing. It heals me and I wish it will be able to heal others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take my friend around New York. We would take a ferry ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan, go to my favorite Mexican spot in West Village called O’Frienda for tacos then have drinks on my favorite roof top terrace – InkHotel – in Midtown. If it’s summertime we would go to a beautiful beach on Fire Island. If it’s fall, we’d drive upstate New York to drive around small towns, colorful woods, mountains and waterfalls. I really love road-trips and would definitely go for a long drive to Florida or West Coast visiting all my favorite places along the way. There’s nothing like a good old road trip with a best friend, good music and lots of catching up.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m incredibly grateful to my manager Alona Lapkovska for being there for me every step of the way. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.
