We had the good fortune of connecting with Keesha Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keesha, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
My business has taught me to be more adaptable and open to unconventional ways of communication and business strstegies.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My creative art style is the fabric of my being. As a child I realized my creative abilities and love of arts and crafts. I’ve always used my imagination and explored my innate ability to bring forth what I imagine to reality. My business is another extension of my creative ability mixed with a practical solution to provide goods that my community needs. Creating my own brand of unique soaps, body butters, body massage oils and candles from an endless variety of sustainable raw goods/supplies is one of my “superpowers”. Building my brand in an over saturated market was challenging. I withstood the test of time with focusing on my business’ mission and goals. I don’t compare my business or crafts to others. I know many people make soaps and candles but only a few people create a signature brand. My brand is simple yet significant gourmet-earthy “sweet” treats for spirit, body and mind. The brand name SugarSoapSuds breaks down to the etymology of the word sugar late 13c., sugre, from Old French sucre “sugar” (12c.), “ground or candied sugar,” originally “grit, gravel” (cognate with Greek kroke “pebble”).-“grit gravel” “pebble” is the base grounded beginning of my brand’s meaning and as my brand grows the context of the word sugar as a verb early 15c., “to sweeten with sugar,” also figuratively, “to make more pleasing, mitigate the harshness of,” reflects slow yet better (sweeter) consistent growth. I use what the earth provides to create enhanced goods for my customers.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout-out to my mother who was a significant contributor with the initial stages of my business- marketing, curator and creative setup for my vendor table presentations. My mother setup and operated my business for some of our first few vending events while I was still working my full time job. Her many years of experience in upper management and talent with design and marketing was an added benefit for my business.
