We had the good fortune of connecting with Keiana Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keiana, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Science and technology are my passion and at the core of everything that I do. Growing up I did not get much exposure to STEM and as I got older and more interested in the field I did not see many people who look like me in this field. Therefore, I wanted to be able to expose more children, especially in underrepresented communities to the world of STEM and what better way to do that then though play. I started to do more community and volunteer outreach and then finally decided to open up a store that focuses on STEM toys for children curated by me.
What should our readers know about your business?
Based in the tech hub of the world, Silicon Valley, The STEM Kidz was created to harness the power of STEM education through the simplicity of play. When I began my career in technology and innovation, I never imagined one day having a company that takes the best in top STEM curriculum and provide that knowledge through toys. In a constantly evolving digital era, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has never been more crucial to the future generations success. I knew that I needed to do something to help my community get involved in this digital transformation. STEM is at the core of our everyday life. From the mobile devices that we use to the rockets that we launch into space, life has never been more about working smarter instead of harder than it is now! STEM education is a revolutionary way of incorporating both theoretical and practical skills into young minds from an early age, preparing them for life in a scientific and technologically based 21st century. It was not easy to get the courage to start a business, I’m a tech geek, what do I know about running a business. There were many hurdles, and sleepless nights but I got though it because I had a mission and knew this was something that my community needed. I was not doing it for me, but to be able to expose a new generation to technology at an early age. I did not get the chance when I was younger, but now someone else can.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be frank, my best friends and I are homebodies. If they were to come into town I would host them at my home and make it a magical experience. Their living quarters in my home would be transformed to make it unique to them, starting with making sure the linens are their favorite color and the aroma would be their favorite scent. Upon their arrival, I would make custom welcome cocktails and decadent appetizers. We would spend the rest of the day in the family room or patio catching up and laughing. To end the night I would prepare a dinner comprised of their favorite dishes (I am known as the chef within my group of friends). Over the next few days we would do family friendly activities such as the museums and gardens (so that our children can join). We would most likely end the week at a beach club or champagne bar.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Family is a pilar in my life and succuss. I want to give a notable mention to my husband Jamaal Jones for always supporting my goals and dreams. It’s critical to have someone in your life who can not only be supportive but also advise and be a listening ear and my husband is that person for me.
