We had the good fortune of connecting with Keimi Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keimi, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that it started as an idea because I enjoy working out and simply just wanted to have a side income, while I finished school and worked weekends. But, as time passed and things became reality, I knew that I wanted to have something of my own, being my own boss, and build it big enough to possibly grow a big company making other women confident. Why not do something that I enjoy while making money?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I sell fitness apparel. I am always looking at outfits for the gym and constantly examining what women wear at the gym. I always want to know what their preference is when it comes to working out. I want women to feel confident and beautiful while working out at the gym. I want women to feel comfortable, yet sexy. As the saying goes, “if you look good, you feel good.” It is important to motivate and uplift them. I’m always reminded by the women in my family that I should feel that way, so I would want other women to feel that way as well. I am very picky when it comes to material and have a specific type of what I want for my sets. I am very proud of myself for getting out of my comfort zone and starting a business because not many people are able to do that. This was not an easy process. I did go through many trials and errors for what I wanted and waited for a while. I am just starting this business, but what I have learned is that patience is extremely important as well as doing things strategically. It is imperative to not give up when something doesn’t work out and to always be grateful for the process. I want this to grow big enough to do a male line and join them together. I have so many goals for Her Own Power and I can’t wait to fulfill them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is perfect! Although they are coming to visit, I would tell them to help with the business in the middle of the week haha. Monday: Brunch at little hen and drink mimosas, next we go to the beach and smoke hookah while listening to music. Usually, Mondays are slow so we just go to dinner, at club Tipico. Even though the name includes the club, it is still a restaurant. I am very Dominican, so I always have to do something Dominican.
Tuesday: Breakfast in West Palm at Dune Decks to have the short rib benedicts and have unlimited popsicle mimosas, next we would go to the Mounts Botanical Garden to take photos and enjoy nature, after that, go to lunch at kapow noodles and neeeed to get the blueberry lavender mojito while snacking on crispy lobster Rangoon. After lunch, shopping at the Boca mall to walk off the food we ate, after that, we do dinner at the wine room Delray and talk about old times. The wine room has so many wine options and a charcuterie board to eat while tasting the wine.
Wednesday: spa day with the girls in the morning and have breakfast at home, make our own mimosas, and smoke hookah. As you can tell I love my hookah. After we paint in the backyard while enjoying the Miami sun. Once we are over the sun we head to El Otro Tiesto to hear some Dominican music and have the ta te quieto sliders and I always order the nueva Yol while drinking La Flaka
Thursday: I tell my friend to help me in the morning with the business, then we have coffee in my backyard to talk, we go to dennys to keep it simple and then my friend leaves lol
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a big shout-out to my mom. She is the person I look up to the most and is my best friend. She is my go-to gym partner whenever we work out. She guides and advises me on what materials would be good quality because she is very big on material when it comes to fitness apparel. She is the person I go to when I want to show her new sets I have in mind for sale. I also give a big shout-out to all my friends and family who have supported me since I began talking about the idea of my business, They have given me words of encouragement and pushed me to get out of my comfort zone when it comes to doing something that I am passionate about.
