We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennedy & Keana Bowen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennedy & Keana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We have always had plans of having our own business. When the pandemic hit in 2020 we lost our jobs and decided that it was the perfect time to use our savings to start a business for ourselves! That was a time where Black creatives in our community did not have a space they felt comfortable and accepted so we filled that gap!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We have always came from a creative background. Our mother always nurtured our creativity and curiosity. We were a very creative and talented Black family and experimented in a bunch of different avenues. Although it was not easy being a minority in certain creative spaces we overcame with perseverance and Mamba Mentality.
After graduating high school one of us went to traditional education route while the other explored more creative avenues. We both decided to combine forces and create a super business! We have been fortunate enough to create a space where we can extend our resources to other creatives in the city.
I want people to know that you do not need a lot of money to make your dreams come true. Just a lot of hard work and taking advantage of every resource that you come across. Also support goes a long way! Support your friends and family in everything that they do!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are in Bourbon country so it’s only right that we immerse in the culture! Our week will definitely be full of distillery tours, cocktail hour at some of the hottest bars, hotels and speakeasies in the city, followed by dinner downtown and you can’t forget some historic museum visits!
Once you get all of the touristy things out of the way we will definitely hit some local live and art shows!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to dedicate this shout out to our mother Latasha Hall. She passed in 2022 but she was and still is such an inspiration and our motivation to keep going! She was such a pivotal part of our business and success. We would not have been able to do it without her!
