We had the good fortune of connecting with Kharma Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kharma, what makes you happy? Why?
THIS IS A VERY GOOD QUESTION. EXISTENCE MAKES ME HAPPY, KNOWING THAT THERE ARE PURPOSES THAT WE ALL AS HUMAN BEINGS SERVE ON THIS EARTH. THE EXPLORATION OF THE KNOWN AND UNKNOWN, SEEING MY FELLOW BROTHERS AND SISTERS STRIVE AND THRIVE THROUGH THE GOOD, BAD AND INDIFFERENT MAKES LIFE EVEN MORE WORTH LIVING AND LOVING. SEEING THE IMPACT THAT I MAKE IN OTHERS LIVES, THROUGH MY CRAFT AND THE VIBE AND ENERGY I EXUDE EACH TIME, CONVERSATIONS, ENCOURAGING WORDS EXTENDED – HELPING THEM TO REALIZE THAT THERE IS HOPE WITH FAITH. GIVING UP AND IN IS NOT AN OPTION BUT A TEMPORARY SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY SITUATION- IT IS ONE OF THE PURPOSES I KNOW I AM HERE TO FULFILL AS BEST I CAN AND IT IS ONE THAT HAS BEEN FULFILLING TO SAY THE LEAST.
WHY? BECAUSE I BELIEVE WE ARE HERE TO HELP EACH OTHER THROUGH THE ROUGHEST OF THE TOUGHEST, SOME SOULS WE CAN SAVE AND OTHERS WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONVINCE OTHER WISE. THE FACT IS WE DO ONLY THE BEST WE POSSIBLY CAN – GIVE IT YOUR ALL AND THE RESULTS WILL FOLLOW. THE CYLE OF LIFE IS INEVITABLE – WHATEVER WE PUT OUT IS WHAT WE RECEIVE – I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED FOR JUST THAT – PUTTING THE JOY BACK INTO THE BROKEN – UPLIFT THE WEARY, STRENGTHEN THE WEAK AND CONTINUE TO EMPOWER THE TRAIL BLAZERS!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a broadcaster (encompassing a Radio Host and DJ) but started out as a dancer and choreographer – High School, trickled down to deciding whether I should pursue becoming a pilot or a Trained dancer – well you know which craft won the toss up! Danced for a few years and ended up working for Margaritaville where we hosted and entertained people from all walks of life, whether they were vacationing Jamaica or simply passing through via cruise ships – “Ville” as we call it, was THE hotspot and I provided the – what we now call “bottle girl service” extraordinaire and more – I danced on stage, poured shots, wore grass skirt and coconut bra, curate/ choreographed pieces for the staff and crew of the establishment. Looking back at everything and how it all came together was the environment was always fueled with entertainment/ music, the mixes were impeccable and the vibe. I wanted to explore the craft of making people happy by being in control of how they would react to the beats being selected -well ,because of how it made me feel, move and the places it took me. Here we are, 17 plus years after! Was it easy? Not at all – It took years to hone my skills, being told that I wasn’t good enough, overlooked. My name means destiny! A God given talent destined to be heard and for greatness! Realization and understanding who I needed to give the glory to made the journey so much more worth while. Very important lesson is to be authentically you and listen to and follow your heart/instincts it is always a message that requires your full attention backed with action! My brand is the epitome of tenacity and empowerment. I thrive to enrich lives with rhythm, rhymes and love! Music heals, it’s powerful and is not something I believe we can and should ever have to live without. How I interpret a particular song, beat, vocals, message, rhythm determines how I am going to mix it, I tell a story with every selection, how each beat falls on top of each other and where I place the phrases and verses to make one coupled with the transition techniques are what make me special or sets me a part from others. Creating content to highlight, educate and entertain opinions/POV’s about life in general, shared thoughts and experiences, being open, honest and engaging with thousands of people whom you may never meet but are widely impacted is an honor and blessing! Me being unapologetically me! Everything else that flows from my brand and story is for others to embrace who they are wholly – staying true to you, it’s the only way to truly win, with faith, patience and belief all through and through.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Most of my friends are low key home bodies, they all enjoy my company at my crib – I am the life of the party, drinks (frozen daiquiris laced with vodka, Jamaican Wray & Nephew white rum with coke/pepsi) alcohol infused fruits (personal favorite), Jamaican food – definitely throw down in the kitchen or what we call “run boat” and since I pride myself in being an entertainer -dancer, dope DJ in a no judgement zone – I’d hook up my players and blaze beats while everyone else is chilling in what I like to call “Zen arena” on the patio (blazing). Hang out spots are by the beach anywhere! We love the sand, sun and sea, born and bred in the Caribbean that is a MUST, so South Beach, Fort Lauderdale beach – Jazz Brunch, Shooters waterfront, rooftop for lunch/dinner, Wynwood is a must – (The Deck) /oasis -the outdoor vibe, ambiance, venue hopping and a Jamaican vibe party – guaranteed vibe! Definitely going yachting, whether private or party boat – sea food is on the menu, lobster, shrimp, fish, anything jerked, fried, steamed and well seasoned and flavored – we love it. We are one with nature – I would take my friends to the zoo, we are kids at heart – Xtreme Action park, Wreck it FT Laudy (Rage Room), Painting with a twist in Plantation to create more memories!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my mother – who is always one step ahead of me with creative and very unique ideas, very close with encouragement, support and unconditional love, daddy (RIP) – always bragged about his daughter being a DJ, introducing me to all his friends who had a sound system, hosting an event or party, telling them about my radio shows and how great I am at what I do – he was a real team player and the loudest voice in the back of the room watching me and smiling with enjoyment and delight! – My sister – who always pondered how did she do that mix so effortlessly, son smooth you wouldn’t hear the next song or realize it was a different record playing. She has always encouraged doing it on my own because I can! My daughter – who is my ultimate MUA, stylist, cheerleader, coach, always listening in and giving feedback on what I can do better! You are the reason I continue to push. Tashiana – you came right on time ! You know exactly what I mean – Thank you!
