We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiara Costa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiara, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
I feel one of the most important lessons I’ve come to learn about selling my artwork and lending my creativity is that not every opportunity that presents itself is worth taking. At times, I’ve been asked to collaborate with brands or work on projects that I realized would require me to sacrifice my integrity. While making a profit is important, I’ve come to find that staying vocal and maintaining one’s personal voice is far more important.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what is attractive about my art is that it has a light-heartedness to it. Whatever the context, it is usually colorful and joyful to look at. I also think that a lot of the subject matter-because it references pop culture a lot-is recognizable to viewers and who doesn’t love to feel nostalgic or feel connected to their generation? I’m always excited about the connections people make to their own lives, memories and passions when they view my art. I’m proud of the subtle layers to my work.
Another thing I’m proud of is the evolution of my art and my professional journey. And it is dope to know that it all began with just building enough confidence to share my art on social media and take myself seriously.
However, everyday does require hard work to find inspiration, motivation, time and authenticity. Once a piece of artwork comes together however, it is the most thrilling feeling of accomplishment. As an artist, seeing something I thought up come into fruition is a beautiful feeling, especially once I share it with my community and find that people are just as excited about it as I am. Of course, everything with this type of pay off comes with it’s challenges. I, personally, am a mother and work two jobs in addition to being an artist, so finding the time to do what I love requires a lot of self-discipline. Having a great support system has really helped me get through any challenging moments of self doubt.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to dedicate my “Shoutout” to my daughter Juniper. I’ve been painting and drawing my entire life and it wasn’t until I became a mother that I felt the courage and motivation to share my artwork. Becoming a parent has driven me to want to set an example of the benefits that come with working on something that you are passionate about.
