We had the good fortune of connecting with CAL Eden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CAL, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I believe in the words of P. Diddy, “can’t stop, won’t stop”. I live my life with the understanding that the only person who can get in my way is me. From an early age I was tenacious and headstrong but it wasn’t until I was met with severe opposition on my path to success that I became resolute. In 2018 I made the decision to quit my job, come back to Miami, and commit 110% of my time & energy towards my vision. Since I’ve garnered a level of success that I’m very grateful for but also know there’s a lot more to come. So how do I know to keep going? I look back at all the trials, tribulations, and lessons that I went through and know that whatever is in my way is just an opportunity to grow.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am CAL Eden. However I wasn’t born CAL. I was born with the name Chance. I studied visual art until college however in high school I started to develop the brand of CAL Eden. It began with a dream. I dreamt I was on a stadium stage performing “Fear Of The Dark” by Iron Maiden. I woke the next day and knew I had to have a rockstar name if I was going dream about being a star. I came up with CAL Eden, which is my initials and a very long story combined, and put the name aside for the right time. College was the right time as I started to get into making music in an L.A. Van, another long story. I eventually transitioned into making music my main pursuit and took on the name CAL Eden to represent what I’m doing. I represent individuality, freedom of expression, and creativity. My music and art is a representation of the uniqueness of the human experience through the metaphor of being an alien. I eventually created the Alien Nation, a community of people that go against the grain and want to change the game. We are steadily growing into a force to be reckoned with.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Basilic, a Vietnamese restaurant on biscane, then go next door to the liquor store and get some outer space vodka to start the week off proper. I would introduce them to the Alien Nation and my social circle. We’d cook up some amazing music, probably a whole EP in the span of the week. On friday we’d have to go to Tharah’s @TheOpenMicHappyHour and on sunday we’d have to go my church, Calvary Chapel Miami Beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my mom. She is my rock keeping my grounded. My grandfather just passed, he used to say I like “pie in the sky”. My mom is the person that brings me back to Earth and gives me the courage to blast off again and again. She supports my vision and has always built me up to be confident and self assured. I love you mom.
